It took them nearly the entire game, but Laser Pros eventually crawled all the way back and rallied to win 14-13 in a wild Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League contest.
Laser Pros got all nine runs back to tie the game after four innings, only to spot Merrill three more in the fifth. Laser Pros tied it again in the bottom of the inning, scored twice in the sixth to take the lead and held off one final Merrill rally that stranded the tying run on third base.
Laser Pros pounded out 13 hits on the night, including three each from Jake Wilmot and Prep League call-up Isaac Bixby. Bixby hit a two-run single to tie the game in the fifth. Wilmot's two-out double gave Laser Pros its first lead of the game in the sixth. He later scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch.
Merrill sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning as starting pitcher Walker Hartman struggled with command, walking nine of the 13 batters he faced.
Undeterred, Laser Pros began its comeback in the bottom of the inning as Hartman smacked a two-run single. Hartman drove in another on a bases-loaded grounder in the third and two more runs scored off a dropped fly ball with two outs in the inning.
Lucius McCann doubled home a run in the fourth and scored on Bixby's infield hit. Max Spaulding and Martin Hoger added back-to-back two-out singles to tie the game at 9.
Connor Lund was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth, setting the stage for Bixby's tying single and, an inning later, Rhinelander pulled ahead.
Hoger struck out six batters over the final 2 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win, but it wasn't easy. He walked five batters, including three in the seventh as Merrill mounted one more charge. The Bluejays tacked on a run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice before Hoger recorded his final strikeout to end the contest.
Danny Zuiker pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, holding Merrill off the board in the second, third and fourth. He gave up two runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Spaulding and Hoger each had two-hit nights for Laser Pros. Zuiker added a hit as well.
Laser Pros (3-4) hosts Merrill Red Thursday night and Tomahawk Friday.
Merrill Red 12, Rhinelander Green 6
Earlier on Tuesday Rhinelander Green also tried to rally against a Merrill team after spotting it an early lead. The Greens did come back, for a little bit, before running out of gas in a 12-6 loss.
After allowing four runs in the top of the first inning, the Greens scored five in the bottom of the inning to take a lead, and another run after Merrill scored two in the second to tie the game at 6. Merrill tacked on three in the fourth and three more in the seventh, however, while the Green team was held off the board the rest of the way.
Alex Kubeny had a two-run single for Rhinelander in the first, but the rest of the Greens runs were scored as the result of Merrill Red errors. Eight different players recorded a hit for Rhinelander Green in the contest - Teagan Guckenburg, Quinn Lamers, Payton Johnson, Ross Skeen, Jason Huseby, Kubeny, Zach Anderson and Riley Lepak.
Guckenburg took the loss for Rhinelander Green, allowing six earned run on four hits over five innings. Lamers pitched two innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
Rhinelander Green (2-5) picked up a forfeit victory over Tomahawk on Monday as the Hatchets did not have enough players available to field a team. The Greens host Crandon Friday night.
Lakeland 6, Rhinelander Black 2
Rhinelander Black fell behind early, but still had an opportunity to win late at Lakeland on Tuesday evening in a Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League tilt.
Lakeland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and then scored a third unearned run in the third.
It was a lead that seemed daunting, given Rhinelander hadn't been able to register a hit on pitcher Alex Fortier going into the fourth.
The black shirts rallied, though, cutting the lead to 3-2, as Jesse Mahner drove in Tim Fox in the fourth, then Nate Cogar scored in the fifth on an error.
Just as it appeared Rhinelander was within striking distance, Lakeland scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to walk away with a 6-2 win.
Devyn Orth took the loss on the mound, going four innings, allowing four hits and walking five walks. Cogar entered the game in relief, allowing three runs in the bottom of the sixth on hits from Keegan McJoynt and Fortier.
Rhinelander Prep 10, Eagle River 0
The Hodags dominated a battle of two of the top three teams in the Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League Monday, defeating the Eagles 10-0 in five innings at Stafford Field.
Rhinelander scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back.
The Hodags collected only five hits in the contest but took advantage of errant Eagle River pitching, drawing 12 walks in the contest, including bases loaded walks by Isaac Bixby and Cole Lehman in the second inning that pushed Rhinelander's lead to 7-0. The Hodags added a run each in the third, fourth and fifth to end the game.
Eagle River, meanwhile, had no answer for Rhinelander's tandem of pitchers, Jacob Schoppe and Joe Schneider.
Schoppe pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings, striking out seven of the eight batters he faces. Schneider went the rest of the way to hold the Eagles scoreless, working a round a hit and three walks. He struck out three.
Schneider and Schoppe each hit doubles in the contest. Jacob Weddle, Mitch Wolosek and Caleb Shefveland collected the team's other hits.
The Hodags (6-1) were back in action Wednesday night at Lakeland and return home this coming Tuesday to face Merrill Blue.
Eagle River 13, Rhinelander Black 8
Rhinelander Black of the Senior League was not so lucky in its tilt with Eagle River on Monday.
The Eagles scored in every inning and defeated the Blacks 13-8.
Rhinelander used a four-run second inning to take a 5-4 lead, but that advantage was short-lived. The Eagles rallied for three runs in the third and didn't trail the rest of the way.
Ben Sinclair had a big night at the plate for the Black team going 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He was responsible for more than half of the Blacks' hits in the contest. Abe Laggis, Jesse Mahner and Kamerin Resch had the others.
Rhinelander used four different pitchers in the contest. Mahner and Fox each allowed four runs, two earned, in two innings of work. Nate Cogar allowed four runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings and Sinclair gave up an unearned run on a hit to clean up the seventh.
Rhinelander Black hosted Merrill Black on Wednesday and closes out a long week of baseball Friday at Merrill Red.
