Rhinelander High School trap team competes at state shoot
The Hodags finished 36th in the 52-team field.
The competitors were met with less than idea weather conditions, but Rhinelander coach Phil Kriesel said spirits were high nonetheless.
"The weather didn't help, but the kids had a great time and we did pretty well. We even had one student who made the 25-straight club, so that was great."
That student was Joshua Johnson, who was in the JV class. He shot a 21 and 19 in the first session and a 25 and 18 in the second session. Only one other shooter, Ryan Holly of the varsity team, brought home a score of 83, the highest for all RHS shooters.
Of the almost 30 students in the RHS trap team, 18 shooters registered for the state shoot and 16 were able to make the event. Erin Drescher, the only girl on the range from the Rhinelander team, shot a 15 and 16 in her first session and an 18 and 15 in her second, for a total of 66 points. The team was made up of one novice shooter, Jacob Bailey, who shot a 57, 10 JV class shooters and five varsity shooters. Johnson, Holly and Bailey all took top male high gun for the team in their division with Drescher taking female high gun for the team.
The state shoot marked the end of the season for the trap team. The Hodags finished third in the WSHSCTL Conference 8 standings with 8,329 points over a five-week season, 151 points behind conference runner-up Frederick. Denmark won the conference title with 12,350 points.
Scott Fox tied for seventh in the conference boys' standings, averaging 22.00 breaks per round. That average was good enough to earn Fox a spot on the all-state team, which recognizes the top 100 shooters across the state.
Makayla Kuester was sixth in the girls' Conference 8 standings with an average of 18.40.
