Senior Leaguers skunked in Thursday play

Rhinelander Black surrendered an early lead to fall to Merrill Blue 10-7 at Stafford Field. Lakeland used two big innings to race past Laser Pros International 10-0 in Minocqua and Rhinelander Green was downed 12-2 by Merrill Black in Merrill.

Rhinelander Black jumped on Merrill for five runs in the first inning but wasn't able to do much else, eventually falling 10-7. The Bluejays took the lead with a two-run sixth inning and tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh despite not recording a hit in either inning.
After Merrill scored a run in the top of the first, Rhinelander Black responded in a big way.
Abe Laggis and Tim Fox each singled to lead off the inning, Jacob Dreifuerst doubled in Laggis and Ben Sinclair walked to load the bases. Nate Cogar and Kamerin Resch each singled in two after that to give Rhinelander a 5-1 lead.
Brett Bennis had a big game for Rhinelander Black out of the No. 8 spot in the lineup, hitting RBI doubles in the third in fifth innings, scoring Cogar both times.
But Merrill chipped away at Rhinelander's advantage. A pair of two-out hits gave the Bluejays a pair of runs in the third. A trio of Rhinelander errors led to three runs and a 6-6 tie in the top of the fourth.
After Bennis' second double gave the Blacks a 7-6 lead in the fifth, Merrill tied the game in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and took the lead the very next batter on a pop fly to second that was not called an infield fly despite there being only one out in the inning. A run scored amid the confusion. A walk and a couple of errors allowed Merrill to tack on two more in the seventh.
Bennis and Resch each had two-hit nights for Rhinelander in a losing effort. They both had two-RBI nights along with Cogar.
Cogar started, pitched five innings and earned a no-decision, finishing on the Babe Ruth-mandated 95-pitch maximum. He allowed two earned runs on nine hits with a pair of walks and a pair of strike outs.
Abe Laggis walked three over a third of an inning, allowing Merrill to tie the game.
Tim Fox was saddled with the loss, despite allowing now hits over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Rhinelander Black (1-3) hosts Eagle River Monday night.
Lakeland 10, Laser Pros 0
It was a tough evening offensively for the Laser Pros International when they traveled to Lakeland on Thursday.
What was a pitcher's duel early devolved into a rout as Lakeland invoked the mercy rule on the Laser Pros, 10-0, in six innings of play.
Danny Zuiker carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fourth inning, but that disappeared quickly, as Max Toijala led off the inning by reaching on an error and then scoring on an RBI double by Keegan McJoynt on the next at-bat.
Zuiker would allow a total of four runs on four hits and two walks in the inning. Aside from the fourth inning, he allowed just one other walk and no hits in five innings of work.
Lakeland put the finishing touches on things in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on three hits off reliever Jordan Kuczmarski. Lakeland also reached on three walks and an error.
The Laser Pros struggled at the plate, also, managing just three hits in the game, highlighted by a laser of double from Alex Olson to lead off the top of the sixth inning. Jake Wilmot and Kuczmarski also added singles in the game.
Laser Pros (2-3) hosts Merrill Blue Tuesday.
Other action
Rhinelander Green didn't have much luck against Merrill Black in the nightcap of a Junior/Senior League doubleheader at Athletic Park. The same was true for Rhinelander's Prep League team, which fell to Merrill Gray 12-7. Further details from those games were not avaialble prior to deadline.
Rhinelander Green (1-4) travels to Tomahawk on Monday while Rhinelander Prep (6-1) hosts Eagle River.
