On Monday, Rhinelander's Prep League team held down Tomahawk's bats and held off the weather to earn an 8-1 victory at Stafford Field. Tuesday, Martin Hoger turned in a dominant pitching performance as Laser Pros blanked Crandon 10-0 in Senior League play.
Laser Pros 10, Crandon 0
Laser Pros were nearly flawless defensively Tuesday and cashed in on some Crandon mistakes to defeat the Cardinals 10-0 in five innings.
A Crandon team that routed Rhinelander Black 26-5 on the same field five days prior had no such luck against Laser Pros. Their offense was shut down by Hoger, who pitched all five innings, struck out 10 and scattered two hits in the win.
Laser Pros got on the board right away, thanks to some heads up baserunning. Danny Zuiker led off the bottom of the first with a double. Max Spaulding laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first. While Crandon hesitated, Zuiker made a break for home and beat out a close throw to the plate to give Laser Pros an early 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the order helped Laser Pros break the game open in the second. After Connor Lund walked, Lucius McCann ripped an RBI double down the left field line and Tyler Olson singled to set up the top of the order. Zuiker bounced into a fielder's choice, scoring McCann, but Olson beat the throw to second on the play. Following a Spaulding walk, Hoger hit a sacrifice fly to right. Two batters later, Jake Wilmot was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Alex Olson hit a sacrifice fly to cap off the scoring in a five-run second.
That was all the offense Laser Pros could muster until the fifth. Hoger grounded to short with two on and two out in the inning and two runs scored when the throw to first went wide. Hoger and Walker Hartman scored two batters later when Crandon dropped Jake Wilmot's fly ball to center.
Laser Pros collected only six hits on the night - including two-hit nights from Zuiker and Tyler Olson. Spaulding and McCann had the other hits.
Laser Pros moved to .500 in league play at 2-2 with the win. They travel to Lakeland Thursday.
Rhinelander Prep 8, Tomahawk Gold 1
Rhinelander's Prep League team was patient Monday and outlasted Tomahawk Gold 8-1 in a game that was called in the top of the fifth inning because of the league's two-hour time limit.
The Hodags collected only four hits in the game, but were aided by seven Tomahawk walks and some errant pitching to score in each of their first three times at-bat.
Rhinelander plated four in the first inning, a frame highlighted by hits from Isaac Bixby, Jacob Schoppe and Mitch Wolosek. Ian Miller singled home a run as part of a two-run second. A grounder by Wolosek and a throwing error helped Rhinelander plate two more in the third.
Tomahawk's lone run came in the third inning following a two-out error.
Schoppe and Wolosek each pitched two innings and struck out three Tomahawk batters in the Rhinelander win. The game was delayed briefly due to thunder following the completion of the fourth inning, with about 10 minutes remaining on the time limit. The Hodags held Tomahawk scoreless in the top of the fifth to end the game.
Rhinelander (6-1) travels to Merrill Gray Thursday.
Other action
Rhinelander Green of the Senior League dropped to 1-3 on the season with a 16-6 loss Tuesday night at Eagle River. Rhinelander Black's game at Merrill Red Monday night was rained out. Rhinelander Green is at Merrill Black Thursday night while Rhinelander Black (1-2) hosts Merrill Blue.
