For Rhinelander's entries in the Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League to compete for the top spot in the standings, they are first going to have to stop beating each other.

Rhinelander Black edged Laser Pros International earlier this year in walk-off fashion and Rhinelander Green proceeded to beat Rhinelander Black with its own seventh-inning heroics. Naturally, last Thursday at Stafford Field, when Rhinelander Green and Laser Pros squared off for the first time this season, it was Laser Pros who came out on top.

What was surprising was the score as Laser Pros erupted for 10 unanswered runs as part of a 14-4 victory in five innings over the Green team. Laser Pros was the only Rhinelander Senior League team to win on home soil Thursday. Rhinelander Black was routed by Crandon 26-5 in the nightcap.

Laser Pros 14, Rhinelander Green 4

Laser Pros scored in every inning but the first and overcame a sluggish start to defeating its intra-city rivals.

Trailing 3-0 heading to the bottom of the second, Laser Pros came alive, plating two in the second and taking the lead for good in a five-run third.

A Jordan Kuczmarski walk followed by a Connor Lund double off third base sparked the second-inning rally. Lucius McCann followed with a sacrifice fly and Lund scored on an error.

Jake Wilmot singled home two in the third as the first five batters of the inning reached safely. The rest of the offense in the inning came via Rhinelander Green mistakes. Max Spaulding scored on a wild pitch. Wilmot and Alex Olson both crossed thanks to errors.

Tyler Olson singled and scored when Spaulding reached on an error in the fourth. A Martin Hoger ground out plated Spaulding. Walker Hartman later walked and scored on a passed ball.

Rhinelander Green got a run back in the top of the fifth, but Laser Pros strung together four runs to end it in the bottom of the inning. Kuczmarski singled home Seth Stafford and a ball off Danny Zuiker's bat ended it. With the bases loaded and two outs, he singled to score Kuczmarski and Lund. McCann came around on a throwing error during the play for the clinching run.

Quinn Lamers put Rhinelander Green on the board in the first inning as he at teammate Teagan Guckenburg executed a double steal of home and second. Zach Anderson walked and scored on a wild pitch in the second and Connor Cooper was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home Lamers. Cooper walked and scored on a throwing error in the fifth.

The Green team was able to generate only three hits off Laser Pros pitchers, but stayed in the game thanks to nine walks. Payton Johnson, Guckenburg and Harlan Wojtusik had the hits.

Kuczmarski allowed three runs on two hits and walked six over four innings for Laser Pros in the win. Hartman worked the fifth, allowing a run on a hit and three walks.

Hoger led Laser Pros with a 2-for-2 day at the plate that included a double and an RBI. In all nine of the 11 players on Laser Pros' roster collected a hit.

Wojtusik took the loss for Rhinelander Green, allowing seven runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Guckenburg and Lamers also saw time on the hill in the loss.

Laser Pros fell to Merrill Red 5-3 a night earlier in Merrill. Both Laser Pros and Rhinelander Green are 1-2 on the season. Rhinelander Green travels to Eagle River Tuesday while Laser Pros hosts Crandon.

Crandon 26, Rhinelander Black 5

Hosting Crandon did not work out so well for Rhinelander Black in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader. The Cardinals scored 15 times in the sixth inning on their way to routing the Blacks 26-5.

The onslaught began with a four-run first inning for Crandon. Rhinelander responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but is was all Cardinals after that.

The highlight of the night, offensively, for Rhinelander Green was a double by Jacob Dreifuerst in the bottom of the first that hit halfway up the Associated Bank sign near the left field line. The Blacks collected eight hits in all, but didn't score another run until the fourth when Tim Fox walked and scored on a Travis Towne grounder. Ben Sinclair doubled to lead off the sixth and came around on Devyn Orth's grounder.

Nick Schiek had two hits for Rhinelander Black in the game. The Blacks used seven different pitchers in the contest. Fox lasted the longest, allowing one earned run on three hits over 2 1/3 innings with no walks and two strikeouts. Towne started, but did not make it out of the first after allowing four runs on two hits with four walks.

Rhinelander Black (1-2) played at Merrill Red Monday evening and will host Merrill Blue on Thursday. Rhinelander's 13-year-old Prep League team routed Crandon 27-0 last Wednesday, hosted Tomahawk Gold Monday and will travel to Merrill Gray Thursday.
