The top three NPHS students were Cassie Gauthier ($75), Laura Garling ($50) and Jack Misina ($25). The top three RHS were Garrett Bachmann ($150), Hunter Bachmann ($100 prize) and Carly Seidl ($75).
In 2017, there were 14 schools competing and almost 300 students. Garrett Bachmann placed ninth overall at the state level. The award money was provided by Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors (WSLS) Foundation and the Northern Lakes Chapter of the WSLS (NLS-WSLS), according to the release. Other financial sponsors for the Rhinelander exam were Rhinelander Partners In Education, D.J. Henkel Associates, Rhinelander Masonic Lodge #242 and A.R. Jones Land Surveying.
The exam is presented by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), the WSLS and the NLC-WSLS. The local sponsor was Tony Jones, A.R. Jones Land Surveying of Rhinelander, with assistance from Kevin Bixby of Bixby Land Surveying of Rhinelander, both Professional Land Surveyors in the State of Wisconsin and members of the NSPS, WSLS and NLC-WSLS.
The TrigStar exam was established in 1983 to introduce math students to real world scenarios using basic trigonometry and geometry that they learn at the high school level, eliminating the age-old question "When am I ever going to use this?" They apply those math skills to problems that land surveyors face on a daily basis, whether they are re-surveying lots in a city, spending the summer laying out miles of reference lines for state highways or establishing survey reference networks for a host of other such as engineers, architects, cartographers or any number of other professions.
Renee Kozlowski, Laurie Kotarba and Taylor Kloehn teach these subjects at RHS and this is the fourth year this exam has been presented. At NPHS, Jacob Husing and Steve Miller are the instructors. With the success seen this year, the TrigStar exam will be a staple in the RHS and NPHS Mathematics Departments for years to come, the release states.
