Rhinelander Green 9, Rhinelander Black 6
Rhinelander Black used some seventh-inning heroics to knock off a fellow Rhinelander team last Thursday. The shoe was on the other foot Tuesday night. Rhinelander Green rallied for four runs with two out in the top of the seventh and defeated Rhinelander Black 9-6 in a Senior League contest.
Ross Skeen capped of a 3-for-4 night at the plate with a game-tying single to right and Alex Kubeny gave the Greens the lead with an RBIāsingle up the middle. Following a Jason Huseby walk, Harlan Wojtusik gave the Green team some breathing room, with a bases-loaded two-run single.
Rhinelander Green struck first with two runs in the first inning, but the back-and-forth contest saw the lead change hands four times.
Quinn Lamers reached and scored on errors, and Skeen added an RBI single for the Greens in the opening stanza. Rhinelander Black answered as Jesse Mahner, who went 4-for-4 on the night, used an infield hit to drive in Abe Laggis. The bottom of the Blacks' order, which was a productive 6-for-11 in a win over Laser Pros International last Thursday, came through again in the second. Nick Schiek led off the inning with a triple and scored on Jacob Dreifuerst's infield hit. Kamerin Resch added an RBI single later in the inning to give Rhinelander Black a 3-2 lead.
Connor Cooper scored on a wild pitch and Skeen crossed on a Huseby infield hit in the top of the fourth as Rhinelander Green retook the lead. Rhinelander Black took advantage of four straight walks by Skeen in bottom of the inning to tie the game, but Huseby came on to induce a fielder's choice out at the plate and a double play ball to get Rhinelander Green out of the jam.
Mahner doubled home Nate Cogar in the fifth. He took third on a wild pitch and scored on a subsequent error.
Wojtusik drew a bases loaded walk to bring Rhinelander Green within a run in the sixth. The Green team loaded the bases with two outs when Cogar reached the 95-pitch maximum limit. Laggis got Riley Lepak to pop out to end the inning.
Laggis couldn't close it for the Blacks in the seventh, however, taking the loss and allowing four runs on three hits with three walks over 1 1/3 innings. Cogar took a no-decision for the Blacks, allowing five runs on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts over 5 2/3.
Huseby pitched four innings of relief in the win for Rhinelander, allowing a pair of unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Cooper started and went three innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
Rhinelander Black outhit Rhinelander Green 9-7 in the contest, but also left 11 men on base. Aside from Mahner's four-hit night, Tim Fox, Devyn Orth, Schiek, Dreifuerst and Resch had hits for the Black team. Copper, Kubeny, Huseby and Wojtusik each had a hit to go along with Skeen's three-hit effort for Rhinelander Green.
Both teams will be home Thursday night. Rhinelander Green (1-1) will face Laser Pros in the first game of the doubleheader while Rhinelander Black (1-1) will take on Crandon in the nightcap. The games will begin at 5 p.m.
Rhinelander Prep 13, Lakeland 1
Rhinelander Prep used a couple of big innings and a no-hit performance from starter Ian Miller to cruise past Lakeland 13-1 in five innings in Tuesday's opening game.
The Hodags jumped on Lakeland for five quick runs in the first, tacked on one more in the third and hung up a seven-spot in the fourth inning to ended proceedings early via the 10-run rule.
Miller pitched three perfect innings for Rhinelander with three strikeouts. Joe Schneider ran into a rough patch in relief in the fourth walking the first two batters of the inning. Josh Wagendorf had a two-out infield single to break up Miller's no-hit bit and plate Lakeland's lone run. Schneider sat down four straight after that, all via the stirkeout, to close out the game.
Rhinelander had plenty of run support by then. Jackson Laabs had an RBI single and Jacob Schoppe hit a two-run single as part of a five-run first. Cole Lehman doubled and scored on Schoppe's fielder's choice in the third. Caleb Shefveland had Rhinelander's only RBI in the fourth. Lehman stole home in the inning as part of a double steal with Miller. The rest of the runs crossed as results of wild pitches or Lakeland errors.
Lehman had a 2-for-3 night at the plate for Rhinelander. Schneider, Laabs, Schoppe, Jake Losch and Brian Stoxen collected the other hits for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (4-1) traveled to Crandon Wednesday night in a game that concluded after deadline. The Hodags return home Monday to take on Tomahawk Gold.
