Rhinelander Black scored three times in the last of the seventh to rally past Rhinelander rival Laser Pros International 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night at Stafford Field.
Rhinelander Green gave up six late runs to fall to Eagle River in the nightcap 9-3.
Rhinelander Black 7, Laser Pros 6
The bottom of Rhinelander Black's order came through as the team rallied past Laser Pros in the season opener. Nos. 7 thru 10 in the Blacks' order - teams can bat an extra 10th hitter in league play - went a combined 6 for 11 and sparked the last-inning rally.
Trailing 6-4, Nick Schiek began the seventh with a leadoff single to right. Jacob Dreifuerst followed with a single past short and Ben Sinclair followed with his second extra-base hit of the night - a triple to right center - to tie the game. Kamerin Resch then hit a grounder to first with the infield in, but Laser Pros was unable to field the ball and make a throw home before Sinclair crossed for the winning run.
Both teams scored a run in the first and traded three-run third innings.
Laser Pros took the lead in the sixth on Seth Stafford's sacrifice fly. A two-out error allowed Lucius McCann to score in the seventh and give Laser Pros a two-run lead.
Martin Hoger struck out 12 in a no-decision for Laser Pros. He allowed four runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings before reaching Babe Ruth's 95-pitch maximum limit. Danny Zuiker took the loss in relief.
Abe Laggis earned the win for Rhinelander Black, allowing an unearned run in an inning and a third of relief. Nate Cogar started and went 5 2/3, allowing five runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Dreifuerst, Sinclair and Laggis each had two-hit nights for Rhinelander Black. They all had hits in the third as the Blacks rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game.
Walker Hartman was the only Laser Pros' player with multiple hits. He went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Stafford drove in two as well.
Rhinelander Black (1-0) will take on Rhinelander Green Tuesday at Stafford Field. Laser Pros (0-1) travels to Merrill Red Wednesday.
Eagle River 9, Rhinelander Green 3
The Eagles scored four in the fifth and raced by Rhinelander Green in the second game of Friday night's doubleheader.
The Greens scored twice in the first and once in the second, but never led in the contest.
A passed ball, a Lars Evensen double and an error gave the Eagles a four-run cushion in the fifth and any chance of a Rhinelander comeback was squashed in the sixth when Eagle River turned an unassisted triple play on a line out to second with a hit-and-run on.
Teagan Guckenberg had a two-run double for the Greens in the first inning. Connor Cooper added an RBI single in the third. Rhinelander collected seven hits overall on the night - Quinn Lamers and Cooper each had two-hit games.
Jason Huesby started and pitched three innings in a no-decision for Rhinelander. He allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Cooper pitched an inning of scoreless relief and Lamers took the loss, pitching the final three innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Rhinelander Green (0-1) faces Rhinelander Black Tuesday.
