Northwood's radiologist receives Rural Health Ambassador Award
The award recognizes health care employees at RWHC hospitals who have gone above the call of duty in promoting their respective organizations, while making significant contributions to rural health, according to a press release announcing Shinners' honor.
"As an advocate for patient safety, Dr. Shinners has and continues to go above and beyond the call of duty to passionately promote the advancements in radiation dose reduction established at Ministry Saint Mary's and bring those processes, practices and protocols to neighboring rural hospital imaging centers in the State of Wisconsin," said Ministry Saint Mary's Chief Operating Office Laurie Oungst.
Dr. Shinners was also recognized for the countless hours spent working with imaging equipment suppliers to ensure selections are made that will result in the lowest dose possible for patient care with the highest possible image quality, the release states.
"He also works with the lead technicians to ensure they have the tools and education they need to operate the equipment to ensure appropriate tests are ordered to maximize the use of the technology and minimize patient exposure," added Oungst.
This work has driven standardization and efficiencies at Ascension facilities across the Northwood's including Ministry Saint Mary's, Rhinelander; Howard Young Medical Center, Woodruff; Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital, Eagle River; Ministry Sacred Heart Hospital, Tomahawk; and Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill.
"Thanks to the leadership of Dr. Shinners, all our hospitals are now benefiting from the ability to share resources and float technicians from one location to the other so staffing demands and patient care needs can be met," said Oungst.
Fourteen individuals from across the state received awards from the RWHC this year. Each recipient demonstrates a history of fostering positive communication and relations within the hospital's respective service area by: serving on community boards/service organizations; taking advantage of volunteer or public speaking opportunities; and supporting community health activities beyond the scope of the hospital.
Incorporated in 1979, RWHC receives national recognition as one of the country's earliest and most successful models for networking among rural hospitals.
It serves as a catalyst for regional collaboration and as an influential and creative force on behalf of rural communities and rural health.
Owned and operated by 40 acute, medical-surgical hospitals, RWHC offers its members a wide range of shared services that meet local community health needs, including: staffing, consulting, management, networking and education. Ministry Saint Mary's is an active member of RWHC; their employees support the shared mission of "strengthening and sustaining rural health."
