Freedom resident accused of injuring man in downtown Minocqua
Lee A. Golden was charged Tuesday with substantial battery, a class I felony, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He made his initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon before Branch II judge Michael Bloom after being arrested Tuesday morning following an interview with Minocqua police.
According to the police report attached to the criminal complaint, officers were dispatched to downtown Minocqua just before 11:30 p.m. July 1 following a report of a disturbance in front of a tavern. Upon arrival, officers found the alleged victim lying in the street being attended to by a paramedic.
Several witnesses were interviewed at the scene, some of whom said the victim had been "pushed really hard," lost his balance and fell into the street. This took place following a confrontation inside the bar, the witnesses said.
After reviewing dashboard camera videos from two different taxis, Minocqua police were able to determine the suspect and a friend had been driven to McDonalds after the incident and dropped off there. After obtaining still pictures from the cab the two rode in, authorities issued a press release asking the public to help identify the man suspected of pushing the alleged victim.
By the time Golden voluntarily showed up at police headquarters Tuesday, with his attorney Brad Priebe, to be interviewed, officers had assembled a string of video recordings from numerous security cameras that allegedly show what happened on the street before the alleged victim was injured, according to the complaint.
According to Minocqua Police Chief David Jaeger, doctors put the alleged victim in a medically induced coma for a time due to a head injury. Jaeger said the man was released from the hospital Tuesday and is still recovering.
Bloom set a $3,500 signature bond for Golden and scheduled a preliminary examination for the afternoon of Sept. 1.
If convicted of the felony charge, Golden could face up to a $10,000 fine and up to three and a half years in prison. The misdemeanor carries up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
