Imagine my surprise when a vendor at the Hodag Farmers Market had several pints of currants sitting along side zucchini, new potatoes, peas, and many, many other fresh vegetables. My mind quickly went back to memories of my very handsome grandpa, what he wore and the scent of his aftershave and hair tonic.
Currants are a member of the gooseberry family and are either white, red or black. They are great to eat fresh, cooked in a sauce or, of course, canned in jelly form (my grandpa said so!).
The currants adorned the tables of Behm's Country Pickn's.
Behm's Country Pickn's, located outside of Gleason, is another vendor at the Hodag Farmers Market known to bring a large variety of fresh, homegrown vegetables. They are also another multi-generational farm with a creative twist.
Anyone who has gardened knows that every spring there is often a bumper crop of rocks. They seem to grow throughout the winter, when fields lie fallow, only to rise up to the surface for easy pickings when the soil is broken up for planting. Now many people might gather up the surplus of rocks and set them aside in a large pile, make a fence or contemplate throwing them at a glass house, but not Behm's Country Pickn's. They found a better idea for their rock surplus: Rock Critters.
Their Rock Critters can withstand the heat of summer as well as the cold and snow of winter. The only thing that they have found that would destroy a Rock Critter is a ladder falling on them. That tells me they are very durable.
Come to Pioneer Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and meet the many different vendors at the Hodag Farmers Market.
