Rebels shut down Northwoods
Bryce Schickert and Jacob DeMeyer combined to toss a one-hitter and the Rebels capitalized on a spate of Eagle River mistakes in a 7-0 victory at Stafford Field. The win moved Rhinelander (14-3, 7-2 GNLC) a half game behind Mosinee in the Great Northern Legion Conference standings heading into a matchup at Tomahawk Friday that concluded after deadline.
Nate Hopkins' double to lead off the third was the only hit allowed by Schickert in five innings of work. He walked one, struck out six and faced two over the minimum during his stint on the mound. DeMeyer worked a perfect sixth and seventh, striking out five of the six batters he faced.
"That's about as good as it gets," Rebels manager Dan Huhnstock said. "It was a very strong effort from our pitchers and just enough, offensively, to secure a nice victory for us."
The Hodags collected only four hits but were handed a number of runs by the Eagles. Only two of Rhinelander's seven runs were driven in as Northwoods committed six errors in the contest.
"We worked for everything we got. Their pitchers pitched very well," Huhnstock said. "We didn't have a whole lot of hits. We played pretty much error-free ball and took advantage of a lot of their errors."
DeMeyer and Brad Quade both scored in the first on a pickoff play gone wrong. With runners at the corners, Northwoods pitcher Brad Sowinski misfired on a throw to first, allowing DeMeyer to score. Quade motored to third and then came around when a rushed throw skirted wide.
Tyler Blomdahl blasted a double off the top of the fence in deep right center in the second to score Kurt Zuiker and scored himself on a passed ball later in the inning. Blomdahl, who's been susceptible to strikeouts at the plate recently, had fallen from No. 4 to No. 7 in the Rebels' order, but displayed a glimpse of the power that makes him a dangerous hitter in the heart of the order.
"He swung the bat well tonight. I know over the weekend he struggled a little bit but he bounced back nicely tonight," Huhnstock said.
DeMeyer singled, stole second and scored on Quade's sacrifice fly in the third. DeMeyer added a double in the fifth and scored from second following an error on a ground ball to short hit by Brad Comer. Comer scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. Zuiker had a hit later in the inning, Rhinelander's only other hit in the contest.
Rhinelander now turns its attention to the Legion AA Regional tournament, which begins Wednesday night at Stafford Field. The Rebels will take on Shawano in the final game of Wednesday's tripleheader, with first pitch slated for approximately 8 p.m. The six-team, double-elimination tournament runs through next Saturday.
