Rhinelander had the best record during the Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League season. During Monday's regular season championship game, it was easy to see why.

The Hodags hit, ran and walked their way past second-place Eagle River in a landslide, 18-2, in five innings at Stafford Field.

Rhinelander, the visiting team as result of a coin flip, scored six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. The Hodags scored twice more in the second, twice in the fourth and eliminated all doubt with an eight-run fifth.

Rhinelander attacked in a number of ways, collecting nine hits in the contest. The Hodags also drew 10 walks, stole 14 bases and took advantage of seven Eagle River errors.

Isaac Bixby pitched three innings of perfect relief with four strikeouts to earn the victory for Rhinelander. Jacob Schoppe started on the hill and worked two innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

The heart of Rhinelander's order did the majority of the offensive damage. No. 3 hitter Ian Miller went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, three runs scored and four stolen bases. Clean-up hitter Joe Schneider was 2-for-3, scored four times and drove in three, including a two-run single as part of Rhinelander's big first inning. Mitch Wolosek, hitting in the No. 5 spot, singled his first three times up and finished the night with three RBIs. Schoppe added an RBI single as part of Rhinelander's big fifth inning and Jackson Labs followed with a double.

Devin Millis had Eagle River's lone RBI, driving in Isaac Vedder on a first-inning double. Frank Milanowski scored on a wild pitch in the second. Milanowski pitched four innings in defeat and Matt Vedder worked the fifth inning.

Rhinelander (12-3) is the No. 1 seed for the Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League tournament, which opens Thursday. The Hodags travel to eight-seeded Crandon as Stafford Field is unavailable to host the contest due to an American Legion game. Should Rhinelander win that game, they would face either Tomahawk Gold or Tomahawk Blue next Tuesday at Stafford Field. Both Tomahawk teams defeated Rhinelander during the regular season.

Senior League teams fall in tourney play

Both Rhinelander Black and Rhinelander Green saw their seasons come to an end Monday with one-run losses in the first round of the Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League Tournament.

Tomahawk defeated Rhinelander Green 5-4 at Kahle Field in Tomahawk while Crandon upended Rhinelander Black 11-10 in Crandon. Further details from the games were not provided. Rhinelander Green finishes the season 4-9 while Rhinelander Black finishes 3-10.

Laser Pros International hosted Merrill Black Wednesday in a tournament quarterfinal game that concluded after deadline.

All-Star roster, schedule announced

The roster for the Northwoods Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Star team is set as the team prepares to begin state tournament play this weekend in Green Bay. Three Rhinelander players are on the 12-man roster - Danny Zuiker and Martin Hoger from Laser Pros, and Teagan Guckenberg from Rhinelander Green.

Merrill Red led the way with four All-Star selections; Lakeland had two; Tomahawk, Eagle River and Crandon each had one.

The 15-year-old state tournament will take place Saturday through Wednesday in Green Bay. Northwoods will face Green Bay and Janesville in pool play on Saturday.
