Laser Pros got five strong innings on the mound from Jordan Kuczmarski and used a three-run third inning to down second-place Merrill Red 4-1 Thursday at Stafford Field.
The game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to lightning.
Kuczmarski was effective up until that point for Laser Pros, scattering four hits over five innings. He didn't allow a run until a two-out hit in the fifth. Kuczmarski struck out six batters and walked only one.
Lucius McCann put Rhinelander on the board in the second with a two-out flare down the left field line that scored Seth Stafford. Rhinelander tacked on some insurance in the third as Max Spaulding singled home Prep League call-up Joe Schneider and Martin Hoger followed with a two-run single. Hoger also singled in the first inning, Laser Pros only other hit in the contest.
Laser Pros closes out the regular season 7-5, in fifth place in the Senior League standings, and will begin the senior league tournament next week.
Rhinelander Prep 12, Crandon 1
Rhinelander's Prep League team snapped a mini two-game slide and closed out its regular season with a 12-1 victory over Crandon Thursday afternoon at Stafford Field.
The Hodags scored multiple runs in every inning and finished the game in five via the 10-run rule.
Crandon scored its lone run on an error in the top of the first, but the Hodags bounced back quickly. Mitch Wolosek drew a bases loaded walk followed by a two-run single by Jacob Weddle to give Rhinelander a 3-1 lead.
Isaac Bixby singled home Brian Stoxen in the second and Caleb Shefveland scored on a wild pitch. Shefveland followed with an RBI single to kick off a three-run third. Weddle scored on a subsequent error and Bixby singled home Gavin Thimm to put Rhinelander ahead 8-1.
The first four batters of the fourth reached for Rhinelander. All four came around and scored. Jacob Schoppe, Thimm and Shefveland had RBI singles in the inning and Bixby drove in his third run of the game on a groundout.
Rhinelander collected nine hits in all in the contest - two each from Bixby and Shefveland and one apiece from Cole Lehman, Wolosek, Weddle, Schoppe and Thimm.
Bixby also got the win on the mound for Rhinelander, allowing an unearned run on four hits with six strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings. Ian Miller closed out the contest.
Rhinelander (11-3) will play in the Prep League regular season championship game Monday at Stafford Field. Their opponent in the contest had not been determined as of deadline.
Tomahawk Gold 11, Rhinelander Prep 10
The Hodags lost a seesaw game Wednesday night at Kahle Field in Tomahawk, falling to Tomahawk Gold 11-10 in a game that was called in the sixth inning after reaching the two-hour time limit.
Rhinelander was making a rally when time expired. The Hodags scored four in the fifth and three in the sixth, but left the tying run stranded on third base.
After jumping ahead 3-0 in the first, the Hodags gave a run back in the bottom of the inning and Tomahawk Gold used three runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 7-3 lead. Tomahawk Gold then scored four in the fifth after the Hodags rallied to tie the game.
The Hodags lost despite pounding out 18 hits in the contest, according to the team's scorebook. Lehman, Miller and Schneider had three hits each; Wolosek, Schoppe and Weddle all had two hits; Bixby, Stoxen and Shefveland each added a hit.
