Classes in the School District of Rhinelander were canceled Monday due to a teacher inservice, but there was plenty of learning going on at the Rhinelander District Library as children were treated to a special program on amphibians and reptiles.

Vernon Gentele, educator at Trees for Tomorrow in Eagle River, presented a powerpoint with photos and shared many facts about amphibians and reptiles native to Wisconsin.

"They were very excited," he said of the children. "I was a little surprised that they knew a lot of the information and were able to answer some questions that we had and the excitement level when you bring out the live animals is neat."

Gentele brought two ball pythons, Greta and Google, for the children to hold or touch if they so desired.

The children, approximately 52 attended the event, sat in two circles, one snake for each, and as the youngsters got their one-on-one time, some of those who were apprehensive of the reptiles warmed up and at least touched the snakes.

Gentele planned to teach the children how to take care of reptiles and amphibians and explain the impact people have on the environment.

Daniel Gillingham enjoyed his first time holding a snake.

"It was really cool," he said.

He likes snakes and wasn't afraid to hold one. If he would be allowed to own a snake he'd like a ball python, he added.

"(The presentation) was really cool," he said. "I did not know the shell of a turtle is called a carapace."

Daniel King was excited about the presentation and his second time holding snake.

"That was really, really cool," he said of the experience. "I really, really like snakes, I have no snake-aphobia."

King is very hopeful that he can have a snake as a pet one day. If he could, he'd love to have a hognose snake (as long as it isn't venomous), which mimics a cobra, he explained.
