Thirty-one Rhinelander students traveled to Wisconsin Rapids on Jan. 6 to compete in DECA Districts. About 500 students in the northcentral Wisconsin region competed in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management areas with hopes of advancing to state. Students could participate in a variety of events with a more specific focus, like human resource management or economics. To advance to state, each student or team had to earn first or second place in his or her event based on how well they performed with role plays a career-cluster test, and an economics test, according to a School District of Rhinelander press release.

When they got to Rapids, competitors had to take a 100-question test that related to a career in the event.

For example, an accounting competitor took a finance test. Students then had to perform two role plays with a judge where they would get a real-life business situation and then act out and attempt to remedy the problem in a 10-minute time period. The judges are often business people or teachers themselves; Rhinelander Principal David Ditzler, Athletic Director Brian Paulson, Kathie Woodford (School District of Rhinelander), and Chip Bromann (Pinewood Country Club) helped judge events.

After practicing throughout December, Rhinelander was able to take several first-, second-, and third-place plaques at Districts. Some students were overall finalists in their event, which means that they were in the top-ten overall. Additionally, medals were awarded to students that performed the best on his or her role play or test.

Two students took first place in their events: Haley Sisel in Hotel and Lodging (who also won three medals) and Andrew Padgett in Economics (a test which all 500 competitors had to take online prior to Rapids).

The following six students earned second place in their event: Max Holperin (Personal Financial Literacy), Lauren Rosendahl (Accounting), Robert Ritchie (Automotive Service), Albiona Sabani (Restaurant Services), Tina Kansariwala (Principles of Marketing), and Michael Bartelt (Principles Of Finance). Holperin and Rosendahl each received a medal, and Ritchie and Sabani took two. Kansariwala and Bartelt participated in events only open to first-time competitors, and Kansariwala earned three medals and Bartlet two.

Faith Bartelt and Mason Hageny each won three medals and took third in their events, Business Services and Accounting, respectively. Abby Krueger won a medal for each of her role plays to get third.

Rhinelander had seven overall series finalists: Shelby Kuehn (Apparel Merchandising), Max Holperin (Economics), Andy Padgett (Human Resource Management), Gunnar Millot (Personal Financial Literacy), Colton Krueger (Personal Financial Literacy), Annika Timm (Principles of Hospitality), and Jonus Sabani (Principles of Business Administration).

Rhinelander students who finished first or second in their events automatically advance to the State Leadership Conference in Lake Geneva March 6-9.

A few other competitors will also be able to join based on the size of Rhinelander's chapter, the release states.
