Anyone interested in starting a career in criminal justice is invited to attend the Careers in Corrections open house at Nicolet College from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Birchwoods Center 116.

At the event prospective students can learn about the training necessary to work in corrections, primarily as county jailers, and how the upcoming nine-credit Jail Officer Academy can serve as a stepping stone to other jobs in the criminal justice and law enforcement fields, according to a Nicolet press release.

The 12-week Academy will meet one night a week and on Saturdays beginning the third week of March.

Nicolet staff, along with corrections professionals, will be on hand at the open house to talk one-on-one with individuals about what it's like to work in the field, the college admissions process, and how to apply for scholarships and financial aid.

Instruction and training in this Wisconsin Department of Justice program will cover all elements necessary to work in corrections, said Tim Gerdmann, criminal justice services specialist and academy director.

"The program will give them the skills they need to effectively handle the day-to-day tasks along with the issues that are not so routine that crop up in a jail environment," Gerdmann explained.

Training will include how to admit and fingerprint new prisoners, search a jail cell, use communication skills to diffuse situations, and how to physically control inmates as a last resort.

The certificate graduates will earn is the first step on the path to the 16-credit corrections specialist diploma. The diploma then ladders into Nicolet's two-year criminal justice associate degree, which opens the door to other jobs such as county sheriff's deputy or municipal police officer, Gerdmann added.

Individuals interested in registering for classes at the event will need to bring along a copy of their birth certificate and proof they graduated from high school. All students admitted to the program will need to pass strength, endurance and agility tests to enter the program and also to graduate.
