Mix in some Bob Dylan, Jimmy Buffet, Gordon Lightfoot, and an Elvis medley for good measure.
That's what local musician Dave Drivas and friends have in store for concert-goers attending his upcoming performance at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 24, in the Nicolet College Theatre.
"I really like the storytellers," said Drivas, who's been a mainstay of the Northwoods music scene for decades. "A lot of what we will be playing will be popular covers, songs that people know, songs that have stood the test of time and have gone on to become true classics that have really defined an era."
Music has been a part of this Rhinelander native's entire life. His first public performance was in 1979. And he's been at it ever since. Drivas is a mainstay at local establishments, fairs and festivals, and a fixture at the Hodag Country Fest Pavilion, a venue he's played for the past 28 years.
Why has he stuck with it for so long?
"I just really love performing," he explained. "I really get a kick out of entertaining people, seeing them smile when I start playing one of their favorite songs. That's what I enjoy and what makes it all worthwhile."
The concert is part of the Nicolet Live! performing arts series, which features numerous national acts as well as local artists.
"The Northwoods has many very talented musicians," Nicolet Theatre Director Jim Nuttall, who books the series, said in a press release. "We want to showcase these individuals and encourage the local music scene to grow as much as possible."
Drivas will share the stage with long-time friends and musicians Mark Wayne, Charlie Strong, and Dan Cable. "Every one of these guys is a terrific musician and top-notch all the way," Drivas commented.
One of the challenges for Drivas in preparing for the Nicolet show was trimming his set list - he said he knows about 2,000 songs - to fit into an hour and half performance.
"There will be something for everyone," he said. "Except for people who like rap. I don't do rap."
Tickets are $10 and can be ordered at nicoletlive.com or by calling (715) 365-4646.
