NWLT offering free guided snowshoe hike at Holmboe Conifer Forest
The hike will begin at 2:30 p.m., organizers said in a press release.
This unique 32-acre tract of "old growth" forest was donated by the Holmboe family to The Nature Conservancy in 1965, and designated as one of the first State Natural Areas in Wisconsin in 1969, the release states. In 2007, The Nature Conservancy donated the property to the Northwoods Land Trust, a non-profit conservation organization based in Eagle River. NWLT now owns and maintains Holmboe which has trails that wind through stands of mature hemlock, white pine, red pine and a black spruce/tamarack swamp, plus views of more than 1,000 feet of natural shoreline on the Pelican River.
Trail access for the Holmboe Forest is behind the Taylor Park building. To get there from the intersection of Hwy.17 South & Hwy. 8/45, go north on Boyce Drive about a half-mile, turn right into the Taylor Park driveway (903 Boyce Drive) and park in the back lot.
"The Holmboe Conifer Forest is one of five properties that have been donated to NWLT since 2001 that are open to the public for hiking, snowshoeing and wildlife watching," the release states. "We'll give a tour of this beautiful property, but will also have maps and information available on the other NWLT-owned properties that are open to the public. Since Holmboe is a State Natural Area, special rules apply. No pets are allowed, even on leash (except seeing-eye dogs)."
The snowshoe hike is open to all ages and is a family-friendly event. The hike will be about a half-mile and less than an hour long.
Hikers are asked to come prepared with appropriate clothing, any personal hiking supplies (water, camera, etc.) and snowshoes (if needed). NWLT will provide light snacks. Please RSVP by calling the NWLT office at 715-479-2490 or email: [email protected] by Tuesday, March 7.
The Northwoods Land Trust is a non-profit organization that works with private landowners who wish to voluntarily conserve their properties. Based in Eagle River, NWLT serves Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Iron, Price and northern Langlade counties.
