Community comes out for Dahlvig bowling fundraiser
By Kayla Thomason-
A large crowd, including a number of first-timers, turned out Sunday for the seventh annual Kory Dahlvig Scholarship bowling tournament at Hodag Lanes.
After he was killed in auto accident in April 2010, Dahlvig's parents, Cherri and Ron, created a scholarship fund in their son's name to help students pursuing a degree in the criminal justice-law enforcement program at Nicolet Area Technical College. Twice a year the family holds fundraisers to benefit the scholarship, including the Run to Remember in the fall and a bowling tournament in the winter.
This year's 9-pin, no tap tournament had 16 teams, with five people per team.
"This year is a good year," said Cherri Dahlvig. "I'm really pleased. The community has really been phenomenal. Whether coming out to bowl or donating prizes, they have been unbelievable."
Tina Wanty a first-time participant and an employee of the Northwoods Transit Connections, where Ron Dahlvig works, enjoyed her time at the fundraiser.
"I think it's awesome, I really like it," she said. "It's for a very good cause, it's fun and it's time to bring in people and have a good time."
Aaron Appling, another first-timer, enjoyed his first experience at the charity tournament.
"It's a lot of fun," he said. "I think it's great (that the proceeds go to the scholarship)."
Joshua Slimm, another first-year participant, enjoyed himself despite struggling a bit with his bowling.
"I like to bowl, I really like to bowl and anything that helps the people out, it's always nice when you can do something little and just help someone for a good cause," Slimm said, adding that likes that the proceeds go to the scholarship because it helps people go to school and he thinks that is important.
"It's a great event, I hope it goes on for many years to come," he said.
This event raises anywhere from $1,000 on up, and all the money goes to the scholarship. The Dahlvigs are also saving money so that if they can no longer keep scholarship events going, there will still be scholarships for people in their son's name.
Since Kory's death, five $500 scholarships have been awarded in his name.
