Dr. Mike Murcko of New Castle, Pa. is fresh out of physical therapy school, having graduated with his doctorate in physical therapy in December, and is eager to make a positive impact on his patients' lives.
He started his undergraduate studies at Penn State University, transferred to Slippery Rock University and graduated from there with a bachelor's degree in biology in December of 2013.
"This is obviously my first job, and with that being said my current goals are to learn as much as I can from the other therapists around me so that I can really integrate myself into the profession and set the stage for a successful career," he said. "I want to not only develop a better clinical understanding of the profession, but I also want to learn to understand the business end of the profession. Ultimately, my goal is to get myself in a position to provide high-quality patient care for a price that is affordable."
He chose this profession for many reasons including his love of working with people, helping them achieve their goals, his enjoyment of exercise and fascination with how the human body works.
"One of the most important things in this profession is being able to connect with each patient/client that you encounter, and then figuring out how to motivate that person. I love being able to help someone realize what their potential is and help guide them to reaching that potential," Murcko said.
He added that he works with people of all ages and conditions.
Murcko's training took him far from home, where he got to assist orphans, and he had an experience he won't forget.
"One interesting thing about my experience to this point is that during the summer of 2016 I was given the opportunity to spend eight days in Haiti as part of my service learning experience at Wheeling Jesuit University," Murcko said. "This not only provided me with some hands-on experience in pediatrics at the orphanages we visited, but it also gave me a chance to really enhance my knowledge of the world we live in."
Murcko is new to the area and hasn't had a chance to explore yet, but he and his wife are excited to see what the Northwoods has to offer.
He enjoys the outdoors, waterfowl hunting, and basketball.
"I played (basketball) in high school and a couple years in college, and since then I have continued to spend time both refereeing and coaching the game," he said.
Murcko works out of the Rhinelander office on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the Crandon office the rest of the week.
He is accepting new patients and appointments can be made by calling (715) 365-5252.
