The Helen Mears Art Contest for seventh and eighth graders has been sponsored by GFWC-WI since 1927, according to a press release announcing the contest. After the opening of ArtStart, local students have been able to have their art pieces exhibited annually in this professional gallery venue. The Woman's Club provides certificates, ribbons, and monetary awards during a reception April 11 for art students, teachers, families, and friends. The art pieces will be displayed for public viewing on April 13-15 and April 20-21. Winners go on to district and state competition. State winners are displayed at the Oshkosh Public Museum. The contest was developed to recognize Oshkosh native sculptor, Helen Farnsworth Mears.
Artists must be in seventh or eighth grade within the geographical area of the School District of Rhinelander. Public, parochial, charter or home-schooled students are welcome. There are categories for painting, drawing, 3D sculpture such as ceramics, paper mache, carving, or metalwork. Melinda Childs, development director at ArtStart, states that the Helen Mears Art Competition has inspired many ideas for the growth of ArtStart youth art programming and also that collaboration has been a benefit to both organizations in their mission to inspire and educate our community.
"Besides the Helen Mears Contest, ArtStart has expanded opportunities for youth and family-friendly projects such as Arty Parties, which are family friendly events including art scavenger hunts, and entertainment," the release states. "With all the youth interest in art the TGI-Art Fridays after school art program will be growing to include multiple age groups and there are plans to add a teen arts council."
