Former Rhinelander AD Shafranski to be honored by NFHS
The award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to NFHS, state high school associations, athletic director and coaching professions, the officiating avocation and fine arts/performing arts programs. The NFHS Citation is one of the most highly regarded achievements in high school athletics and performing arts. Shafranski is the recipient of the honor in Section 4.
Shafranski joined the WIAA staff in 2002. His responsibilities include the administration for the sports of golf, hockey, swimming and diving, and tennis. He also oversees the prestigious WIAA Scholar-Athlete program and provides support for student eligibility matters.
In addition to his contributions at the State association level, Shafranski has been active on the national landscape with service on the NFHS Ice Hockey Rules Committee in 2003-04, 2008-2011 and 2016-present. He served as the chair of that committee from 2011-14. His leadership led concussion, checking from behind and other safety rules to be implemented.
Shafranski has also served as a member of the NFHS Swimming and Diving Rules from 2005-2009.
During his tenure on the staff, Shafranski has been honored as the 2009 Wisconsin High School Golf Coaches Association Friend of Golf recipient. The inscription on the award states "If there has been a way to improve the growth, administration, rule issues or competitive opportunities for golf, Tom has made it happen."
Prior to joining the WIAA staff, he served as athletic director at Stevens Point Area High School for one year. Before his appointment at Stevens Point, he held an associate principal position at Wausau East High School for one year. From 1996-2000, Shafranski was the activities director for grades 6-12 in the Rhinelander School District after serving as the associate principal and activities director for just the senior high school from 1993-96. Other high school administrative experience included a one-year stint as principal at Hortonville High School from 1992-93.
Shafranski taught business education classes at West Bend East from 1982-87 when he was named the district's AODA coordinator in 1987. He was chosen assistant principal in 1989, a position he held from 1989-1992. During his tenure at West Bend East, he served as head track and field coach from 1987-89 after serving as an assistant from 1980-86. He was an assistant coach in football and basketball from 1977-88.
In addition to his school responsibilities, Shafranski was also active in state and conference affiliated activities. He has been an American Sport Coaches Education Program and a Program for Athletic Coaches Education instructor. He served on the WIAA Scholar-Athlete Selection Committee from 1998-2000 and was a mentor for new athletic directors for the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association. He also served as the chairman of the Wisconsin Valley Conference Sportsmanship Committee.
Eight of the 12 award recipients represent NFHS-member state high school associations, and four recipients represent NFHS professional organizations for officials, coaches, music leaders and speech/debate/theatre directors. The other three Citation recipients are being honored for their contributions to the NFHS at the national level.
The seven other state association recipients are Richard Neal, Section 1, Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association; Bob Goldring, Section 2, Ohio High School Athletic Association; Karen DeHart, Section 3, North Carolina High School Athletic Association; Stacy Schroeder, Section 5, Missouri State High School Activities Association; Tom Robinson, Section 6, Colorado High School Activities Association; Dr. Harold Slemmer, Section 7, Arizona Interscholastic Association; and Tom Welter, Section 8, Oregon School Activities Association.
The four Citation recipients representing the NFHS professional organizations are Sharon Hughes, NFHS Officials Association; Dick Katte, NFHS Coaches Association; Neil Hendriksen, NFHS Music Association; and J. Scott Baker, NFHS Speech/Debate/Theatre Association current professor at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The other three Citation recipients are being honored for their contributions to the NFHS at the national level. These individuals are Lee Green, J.D., an attorney and professor emeritus at Baker University; Dr. David Hoch, a retired high school athletic director and coach; and Steffen Parker, a former high school music educator in Vermont.
The 2017 NFHS Citation recipients will receive their awards July 1 at the 98th annual NFHS Summer Meeting in Providence, Rhode Island.
