Even as a member of a Division I hockey program, Rhinelander High School alumna Katie Detert says she still learns something about the game she loves every time she gets onto the ice.

"We learn a lot every day. It kind of takes some effort to learn in the game, to translate that over (from practice to a game)," she said, speaking to the River News earlier this month while back home on winter break watching the RHS boys' hockey team take on Tomahawk.

Detert is still looking for her first collegiate point halfway through her second season, though she's getting more playing time, typically as a forward on the Huskies' third or fourth line. She made her first collegiate start at wing Oct. 14 during an exhibition game against the semi-pro Minnesota Whitecaps women's team.

"This year's been going a lot better, obviously getting a little more playing time," said Detert, who credited an offseason's worth of work that included skating with a men's hockey league in Minocqua over the summer. "I've graduated from a freshman to a sophomore. That definitely helped a little."

Detert has played in 11 games so far this season for St. Cloud State, after appearing in 21 games a season ago. She's recorded six shots on goal, one blocked shot and taken one penalty so far this season.

The Huskies are 3-14-2 overall this season and 1-11-2 in the WCHA. Before the break, however, they played a competitive home series with top-ranked Wisconsin, falling to the Badgers 1-0 and 3-0.

"It was just super fun to get out there with those high-intensity players, a lot of them on Team Canada or Team USA," Detert said. "It's awesome to get the exposure to that high intensity and high level out on the ice. It's pretty cool."

Detert noted that school itself has been going well, and that she switched her major to marketing. She had finals the morning of Dec. 14 before she made the trek back home.

Detert got back in time to watch her old high school team, the Northern Edge, fall in a competitive game against Wisconsin Valley Union 3-0 and the RHS boys' team knock off Tomahawk 6-0 which was, at the time, the team's seventh straight win.

"It was great to see them out there working hard," she said, referring to her old teammates on the Edge. "It seems like they've put a lot of work in and I'm excited to see how the rest of the season goes. They're looking a lot better this year. It's fun to see some familiar faces and its fun to see the boys doing so well. I'm friends with a bunch of them and it's nice to see them succeeding."

St. Cloud State returns to action Jan. 5 and 6 with a two-hame home series against Minnesota State Mankato.
