Lions prepare for 30th anniversary Christmas Not Alone dinner
By Kayla Thomason-
Anyone is welcome to partake in the Christmas dinner which has been offered to the community every Christmas since 1987. The meal will consist of turkey, potatoes, dressing, vegetables and a variety of desserts and will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Christmas Day at Nativity of Our Lord Saint Joe's site (1360 N. Stevens St.).
No reservations are needed for those who eat on-site.
Thousands have enjoyed a warm holiday meal over the last 30 years, thanks to the dedication of the Lions Club.
"The Rhinelander Lions are proud to continue sponsoring Christmas Not Alone since 1987," said club member Mike Romportl. "What started out as a small gathering of people and now serving over 300 meals is very rewarding."
The Lions and the volunteers prepare and serve dinner to more than 300 people and make about 100 deliveries to shut-ins.
"Today, many families are scattered throughout the country which may make it more difficult to gather as families," Romportl said. "Some people may just choose not to travel during the winter or people may be experiencing financial difficulties. Some people come just because they don't want to go through all the work of preparing a meal for just themselves. Therefore, sharing this dinner with anyone for whatever reason is very heartwarming for the Rhinelander Lions."
Free deliveries can be arranged by calling (715) 282-5904 before Christmas Day, or (715) 490-0048 between 9 a.m. and noon on Christmas Day.
Rapid Cab Company will be offering free taxi rides to the meal site and can be reached at (715) 365-7433.
Those who wish to volunteer with members of the Lions preparing, serving and delivering meals can call Tom at 715-362-6534, Sandy at 715-690-6208 or Dick at 715-490-1899.
Setup is set for Dec. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon, meal preparation will be on Dec. 25 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with cleanup to follow.
Tax deductible donations to this meal can be sent to the Rhinelander Lions, PO Box 1005, Rhinelander, WI 54501.
The Lions thank everyone for supporting their fundraising events, which help them to continue to give back to the community.
"While the Rhinelander Lions takes the lead in organizing the Christmas Dinner, it would not be possible without the tremendous help that we get from many volunteers," Romportl said. "The Rhinelander Lions thanks the community for their continued support and wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a very happy and safe holiday season."
