Nordic ski club receives WPS Foundation grant
Members of the club received the grant from the WPS Foundation during a presentation Friday afternoon at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom.
The club stated in a press release it plans take possession of the snowmobile in November.
The Nordic club consists of an all volunteer community of outdoor recreation enthusiasts whose primary focus is on the development of elementary, middle, and high school cross country skiers entering the sport for both general outdoor recreation and competition.
The WPS Foundation, incorporated in 1964, is funded by shareholders of the company and not by its gas and electric customers. The Foundation's grants promote volunteerism and support organizations involved in community and neighborhood development, education, the environment, arts, culture, human services and health. Wisconsin Public Service the utility was incorporated in 1922 and currently serves more than 450,000 electric and 326,000 natural gas customers in central and northeast Wisconsin and an adjacent portion of Upper Michigan.
According Northwoods Nordic, the club currently has 85 dues-paying adult members, grooms 14 kilometers of public ski trail at the Northwood Golf Course property and supports grooming operations on five kilometers of trail at CAVOC as well as short trails at various public and parochial schools in the Rhinelander area.
Maintained trails are used by the club's 80 team skiers, dozens more elementary school physical education program skiers, public school competitors from around the state, the Rhinelander recreational skiing public, and visitors to the area.
The Nordic Club also organizes skiing events and competitions for elementary, middle and high school skiers including The Hodag Challenge race held annually in January.
The Nordic Club will host NCAA/Central Collegiate Ski Association racing again in February of 2018 at CAVOC and the Club is currently negotiating to host a future Midwest Junior Olympics Nationals Qualifiers competition in Rhinelander. All of these events enable the club to raise money for skiing programs for Rhinelander youth skiers.
The Northwoods Nordic Club welcomes new members and is looking for additional partners to help it defray the full expense of its new snowmobile. The club is an 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation and all donations to the club are tax deductible.
