Hodag Farmers Market offers unique, natural soaps

Farmers markets are not really known for having a lot of craft items, opting instead to lean more heavily toward fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, meats, cheese, plants and bakery. However, exceptions are made when a great soap maker comes around. Farmers markets really only want crafters who have a truly unique product or utilize old-time, traditional, heritage crafts; the type of crafts our forefathers and mothers applied to their daily, homesteading lives.

Not all soap making is created the same; there is hand-crafted soap and handmade soap.

Hand-crafted soap is like the melt and pour glycerin kits and classes that are very popular. Handmade soap is made from scratch: basic ingredients are cold processed with oil(s) and lye which causes a chemical change resulting in soap.

The best part of handmade soap, besides being biodegradable, is the fact that there are no petroleum byproducts in the finished soap. Many mass-produced soaps have petroleum in them causing skin to become dry and itchy. Some people suffer from this additive more than others.

Mountains Dreamz, from Eagle River, sells all natural soaps and the Hodag Farmers Market is the only market where the soaps can be found. The inventory for this vendor also includes many herbal remedies in soaps, balms and salves.

The best selling item is a topical pain relief ointment. The products are all natural, 80 percent of the herbs used are gathered locally, naturally and sustainably, and even the dyes used in all the products are natural. All the recipes used are also traditional.

Mountains Dreamz learned the soap making craft from many elders and incorporates an earthy, spiritual approach to all of its products. Mountains Dreamz also has an Etsy site: https://www.
