Home cooking served the Rhinelander High School girls' tennis team well as the Hodags won all three matches of an invitational Friday at the RHS tennis courts.

The Hodags started the day with a 5-2 victory over Merrill, defeated Ashland 6-1 and closed with a 7-0 win over Ironwood, Mich.

Rhinelander swept singles in the match against the Bluejays and nearly did the same in doubles, but the second and third Rhinelander tandems of Madi Losch/Alexis Pyrchalla and Savannah Chartier/Jackie Wells dropped third-set tiebreakers.

The Hodags came back to sweep doubles against Ashland before closing things out with a dominating win over Ironwood.

Several Rhinelander players went undefeated on the day, including Belinda Weddle, Emma Roberts and Kenedy Van Zile in singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Haley Seefeldt and Livi Roberts.

Weddle was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Merrill's Anna Shoviara, used a third-set tiebreaker to down Ashland's Taylor Vyskocil and then routed Ironwood's Makenzie Marshall 6-3, 6-1.

"Belinda continued her hot streak with going 3-0 for the day. Not as sharp as yesterday (at Marshfield Columbus) but still enough game to string points together," RHS girls' tennis coach Bob Heideman said. "A little more defensive tennis today and letting her opponent make the error."

Emma Roberts dropped a total of three games in three matches and Van Zile rallied to win three-set matches against Ashland and Merrill.

"Emma Roberts put three good matches together. Each opponent played a different style and Emma adjusted well," Heideman said. "Kenedy has been improving match to match and today was another step. In both matches, she weathered losing the first set, played pretty steady in the second, then used that momentum to win the deciding tiebreaker. As a first year varsity competitor, to have two comebacks in the same day speaks to her emerging maturity."

Alex Oestreich (No. 2 singles), and the doubles team of Losch/Pyrchalla and Chartier/Wells all went 2-1 on the day. Izzy Haverkampf picked up a win at No. 4 singles in the last match of the day against Ironwood.

The Hodags concluded the first week of the season 7-3. They host Medford Tuesday at the RHS tennis courts.
