Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival returns to Torpy Park Aug. 19

The second annual Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 19 at Torpy Park in downtown Minocqua.

"This event benefits the Howard Young Foundation and is made possible by the many sponsors involved," organizers said in a press release. "Help by pledging to a team of dragon boat racers or volunteer at the event."

From 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18,

Dragon boat teams can check in with registration from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday Aug. 18.

Saturday's events will start with a mandatory 7:15 a.m. captain's meeting. The opening ceremony is set for 8 a.m., followed by the first round of races beginning at 8:30 a.m. Three teams will race approximately every 10 minutes. At 3 p.m., the final round of races will begin. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m.

"It's a sight to see, as 45-foot boats are powered by 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson," the release states. "From the zany team themes and costumes to the cheering and live music, the day is filled with fun and entertainment - all for a great cause. Every dollar raised supports the Howard Young Foundation's mission to ensure excellent health care for all who live and visit the area. Support is as easy as ... a day at the beach."

The races aren't the only thing happening Saturday. Guests can enjoy beer, food, and children's activities. The Forbidden City Food Court, provided by the Minocqua Lady Lions Club, will serve food from around the world. The Dragon Breath Beer Garden will also be serving beer and wine provided by the Lakeland Noon Rotary Club on the upper level of Torpy Park.

The Marketplace has will have souvenirs to commemorate this event. There are 26 registered teams and with each team there are 20 paddles, one steersperson and one drummer per boat.

That means around 3,000 to 4,000 visitors could be coming to Minocqua just for the Dragon Boat Festival, the release states.

No experience is necessary and those interested in paddling can call the foundation office at 715-439-4005, as there may be teams who are still looking for paddlers.
