The Rhinelander District Library reports the free solar eclipse glasses it was giving out last week were gone within two hours.
"The solar eclipse glasses were given out starting 9 a.m. and were all but gone by 11 a.m.," library officials said in a press release. "Other area libraries may have them, but it's recommended to call ahead. They will be available for purchase at a few area stores, most notably Imaginuity on Brown Street in Rhinelander."
The highly anticipated total solar eclipse happens on Monday, Aug. 21. The eclipse will begin around 11:50 a.m. with approximately 80 percent coverage happening around 1:20 p.m. The library will live-stream the NASA feed of the eclipse on the main floor via laptop, and will project the archived footage of the eclipse in the lower level meeting room from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Those who can't make it to the library can stream the eclipse themselves at https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-live-stream https://www.nasa.gov/eclipselive.
It is highly recommended to be very cautious with the use and care of these glasses. As little as a scratch will render them absolutely useless; this could result in blindness, the release states/ Please consult NASA's website for safe live viewing of the eclipse and proper eyeware for same, the release states.
While the glasses are gone, there are many other interesting things to be found at the library, many for free.
According to the press release, the library has regular giveaways of books, pocket constitutions, comic books, summer reading program prizes and much more, in addition to regular library services such as public computers, 24- hour Wi-Fi availability, information assistance, materials to borrow, and programs for all ages.
"If you're still looking for free stuff at your library, there are still a number of Advanced Reading Copies (ARCs) also known as uncorrected proofs of books waiting for reviewers," according to library director Virgina Roberts."That's right, all we need is a review, once a person has read the book they selected. It helps the library choose books the community likes to read! There are also a few comic books and free magazines and newspapers available to the public as well. Just stop in to Rhinelander District Library. There is something here for everyone!"
