A hungry crowd gathered at Peoples State Bank Friday for a delicious cookout benefiting the Rhinelander fire and police departments and the Oneida County sheriff's department.

"Every day, 365 days a year they (work to keep us safe) so to donate to people that put their life on the line means a lot for a small community and we want to be able to back them no matter what's going on nationwide," said Brandon Karaba, mortgage loan officer for Peoples State Bank.

After just 30 minutes, 50 to 75 delivery orders had come in from local businesses, organizers said.

"I can't thank the community enough and donating to a great cause and supporting all of our local agencies," Karaba said.

Sgt. Kurt Helke of the Rhinelander Police Department was heartened to see the community support law enforcement and emergency workers.

"This is incredibly important to know that the community supports us in a day and age when law enforcement has been seen in a negative spotlight far too often," he said. "Little things like this can go a long way."

Marian Quade enjoyed the food and was pleased that the proceeds benefit the men and women who put their lives on the line.

"I think it's for a good cause," she said, adding that she enjoyed talking to officers and learning more about their jobs. "That's where it (the proceeds) should go, they need it."

Lacy Santilli and her 3 1/2-year-old daughter, Kenedy, had a good time checking out the police vehicles and enjoying a nice meal.

"I think this is great, it's a great opportunity for the community to support those who serve us and Kenedy looks up to these guys so she was pretty excited to come and experience this, too," Santilli said.

She thought it was a good experience for her daughter to meet officers and firefighters and to see that they are just regular people and she shouldn't be afraid of them.

"I think it's great, I think we all need to support them and do what we can to support them and this is a great way for the community to do that," she said. "Just thank you for all you do to the local police and fire and EMS."
