James Beck Cancer Center to hold 10th annual Celebration of Life
This year's guest speaker is Mike Regole of Eagle River. Regole was diagnosed with cancer of the right tonsil in July of 2016 and received treatment at the James Beck Cancer Center, organizers said in a press release. He will share his treatment story and enjoyment of life which includes hockey, hiking and the woodworks business he shares with his son Anthony.
The Celebration of Life is to honor those who are battling or have battled cancer, for their strength and courage; to recognize the contributions of their families and friends; to promote awareness that knowledge, hope and inspiration can help beat the impact of cancer.
"We encourage anyone in the community to attend this event to emphasize the fact that cancer survivors can live active, productive lives even though they may still face many challenges," said Kim Hetland, director of Cancer Services at James Beck Cancer Center.
Following the ceremony there will be a butterfly release, an open house which will feature tours of the James Beck Cancer Center, an ice cream social, educational displays and support materials, and a dedication of the newly placed commemorative bricks and bench will be held. Light refreshments will be served.
According to the American Cancer Society, there are an estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors in the United States. This has increased from three million survivors from 1971 with more than 1.5 million new cancer cases expected to be diagnosed in 2017. With knowledge, hope, camaraderie, compassion, and faith, people are living active and productive lives after a cancer diagnosis, the release states. Surviving cancer is an attitude about living life everyday despite the challenges cancer brings.
