Three Lakes Center for the Arts to focus on Mental Health Awareness Month
Northwest Passage is a residential mental health treatment center in Webster, Wis., which empowers youth to discover their potential through art and nature, according to a TLCA press release.
This treatment center restores hope to children and families with a philosophy which borrows from the wisdom of the past while combining with current research about the importance of living a full and mindful lifestyle, the release states.
"In A New Light" emphasizes skilled expressive arts training and nature immersion, ultimately empowering youth to define themselves by their strengths rather than their weaknesses.
From 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 13, TLCA will host a free artist reception, open to the public, with Ian Karl, the Experimental Programming Coordinator for Northwest Passage, Ltd.
A free screening of the documentary film "Paper Tigers" will follow at 7 p.m. (This film is not rated but has some "language"). The director of the film, James Redford, explained, "The film follows six troubled teens over the course of a year at an alternative school in rural Washington, which is considered a last chance before dropping out. Many students come with a history of behavioral problems, truancy and substance abuse. 'Paper Tigers' is a testament to what the latest developmental science is proving: That one caring adult can break the cycle of adversity in a young person's life."
Visit the gallery to see the photographs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and any time the theater is open for films or live events. For more information visit TLCA at 1760 Superior St. Three Lakes, WI, online at www.tlcfa.org or call 715-546-2299.
