It was far from an easy win for the Hodags, however, as the team had to rally to win three, three-set matches in singles and also had a long match in the top doubles flight.
Logan Wild and Russell Benoy had similar plights at Nos. 1 and 3 singles for Rhinelander, dropping the first set by a break before taking control of the match. Wild dropped the first set to Aaron Peterson 4-6, before taking the second 6-2 and the third 6-3. Benoy lost the first set to Matt Holmes 5-7 before winning the final two 6-1, 6-2.
Markus Johnson had a more difficult struggle in the second singles flight, dropping the first set to Lakeland's Vincent Yu 6-2. The second set went to a marathon tiebreaker, which Johnson finally took 13-11. Johnson used to momentum to take the third set, and the match, 6-3.
Though Rhinelander won at No. 1 doubles was in straight sets, it followed a similar pattern to the singles. Jared Fabich and Grant Gilbert got by Zach Kane and Anthony Holmes 7-5 in the first set before picking it up in the second and rolling to a 6-3 win.
The only Hodag entry that had an easy go of it Thursday was the No. 2 doubles pairing of Jared Haug and Connor Young, who defeated Josh Kakuschke and Alex Tucker 6-1, 6-1.
Lakeland, which is unusually low on numbers this season, did not field entries at No. 4 singles or No. 3 doubles. Marshall Bessette picked up a forfeit win for the Hodags in singles while Logan Oestriech and Freddy Wisner won by default in doubles.
Rhinelander coach Bob Heideman could not be reached for comment prior to deadline.
The win moved the Hodags to 2-0 in the Great Northern Conference, and 4-1 overall. Rhinelander traveled to Green Bay Southwest for an invitational yesterday. The two-day competition concludes today.
