Rhinelander Rotary Club throws 'roaring' gala at Holiday Acres
By Kayla Thomason-
Maggie Steffen, who suggested the 1920s theme, wore a blue sequin- embellished fringed flapper dress.
"It's just easier, I think, when you have an event to have something around it and it just makes it more fun," she said.
Keeping with the theme, Jim Franklin of Coyote 93.7 WCYE provided the entertainment, playing jazz standards with his band.
Steffen said about 120 people attended, many wearing period-appropriate garb.
Jessica Mansavage, the club's treasurer, loved the theme.
"I love it," she said. "I was hoping to see a bigger turnout than last year and I think that there's more enthusiasm this year compared to last year and I'm hoping that we are able to raise more money."
She wore a black and gold sequin-embellished fringed flapper dress, and accessories.
"I googled it," she said. "I googled '1920s' and it came up and I went to Amazon and I think this whole thing cost me $50."
She was pleased to see so many people dressed up.
Dwight Webb, president of the Rotary Club, was decked out in a suit and suspenders. He pronounced the night a success.
"Good so far, it's really fun," he said. "The theme is fun. It's fun to get dressed up in some other era."
This was the first time the club threw a theme gala, but Webb was optimistic about holding more theme events in the future.
"It's fun doing a theme," he said. "It gives you something to look forward to, dress up in an abnormal way."
Reijo Huddunen, Rotary Gala member, also enjoyed the theme. He was dressed in a nice suit.
"I like it, how everything is arranged this time," he said. "I was giving some compliments already as this is very, very nice."
He thinks the event is important, not only because it's a fun night out but because it benefits the community.
"This is a very important part of the community, we are meeting here having fun and we're doing some good for the community," Huddunen said.
Proceeds from the gala fund the public library, NATH, Rhinelander Area Food Pantry and many non-profits.
"We are always looking for new members, younger members," Mansavage said. "As people retire it's a little bit more challenging, they get busy and want to spend more time with grandkids. The younger adults is definitely something that we are looking to add more."
