8 RSC records fall at Midwest Regional
To be eligible to compete at this meet, the swimmers needed to have qualifying times in each of their events.
Several RSC records were broken at the meet. Jack Antonuk, 12, set new club marks for his age group in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.57), 50 breaststroke (33.20) and 500 freestyle (5:39.40). Makenna Winnicki, 13, set new marks in the 200 backstroke (2:18.59), 200 butterfly (2:24.84) and 400 individual medley (5:06.07). Abi Winnicki, 10, broke the 50 breaststroke record that had been in place for 27 years with her time of 36.58 seconds. She also broke the club's 200 freestyle record (2:18.28).
Abi Winnicki, finished second in her age group for the high points award. Joseph Heck, Antonuk and Makenna Winnicki recorded state-qualifying times in the 50 freestyle (24.53), 100 freestyle (59.45) and 200 butterfly (2:24.84), respectively.
"The biggest highlight for me this meet was watching Makenna Winnicki break the RSC record in the 200 back which I had held," club coach Megan Cihla said. "I was very honored and proud to have been the coach of the swimmer who broke it. I loved being on the pool deck watching her swim for this record. She had this on her list of goals for the season; she trained hard for it and deserved it! It was so exciting to watch everyone swim. This was the biggest pool with the most competition a lot of these kids had ever seen. There were over 1,000 swimmers from eight states. That excitement was energizing, helping everyone swim at least one personal best, if not multiple personal bests throughout the meet. These kids came off an incredibly long winter season and still managed to drop a significant amount of time, that is impressive and they should all be very proud."
