The springs sports season may be in full swing, but the Rhinelander High School golf team spent the first day of practice indoors on Thursday.

Weather has not allowed the team to venture onto the course yet, so the Hodags spent their first day getting organized.

Rhinelander has 18 golfers out for the team this season and the first day was spent getting acquainted.

"First day, we kind of talk to them and figure out who's going to play, who's coming out, talk to them about the parent meeting, give them the schedule, do a little team building exercise so we can get to know each other and then we're going to talk to them about the rules," Rhinelander head coach Adam Schmidt said.

Obviously, golf is an individual sport, but it takes four scores to win a meet.

In order for players to clear their minds and shoot as well as they can, they need to get along with their teammates.

"If they're constantly at each other and they don't trust each other and they don't feel comfortable, they're not going to be in the game and they're not going to shoot low scores," Schmidt said. "It's nice to know that your team has your back, that your team members are comfortable with you and just makes it less stressful."

Every team has rules, but in golf the rules are a bit different.

Not only are all of the matches at a venue not owned by the school, but there isn't consistent adult supervision.

In matches, kids are put into groups of four and they are responsible for reporting accurate and honest scores at the end of the round.

"Golf is not a sport played with a ref," Schmidt said. "The ref isn't there standing next to you. It's three or four guys in a group, so it's a sport that's all about integrity and calling your own mistake. Your partner might not see you. The nice thing about golf is that it teaches you integrity and you need to call that penalty or stroke on yourself."

The Hodags are scheduled to open the season April 13 at Ashland.
