Marshfield Clinic and Security Health Plan contribute to Weekend Food for Kids program
"We want to prevent kids from going home for the weekend and facing empty cupboards," Dr. Michael Schaars, medical director, Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center, said in a press release.
To address this need, the food pantry and the school district partnered to create the program, which currently serves over 200 children, the release states. Backpacks are packed for each child with nutritious and simple meals that a child can prepare if an adult is not available.
The backpacks are provided to elementary school students who are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program and any siblings who are in the household.
"Making certain children have healthful food during the weekend is very important," said Jay Shrader, Security Health Plan director of disease management and wellness. "Poor nutrition has been linked to chronic health conditions, psychiatric distress and behavioral problems."
"We appreciate the $1,000 donation we received from Marshfield Clinic and Security Health Plan," said Guy Hansen, executive director, Rhinelander Area Food Pantry. "The cost of the program is approximately $4 per student per week, multiplied by approximately 208 students, so this contribution funds the program for more than one weekend."
