Fall Ride has arrived: Full slate of activities this weekend
New leadership for downtown activities focuses on veteran support
The notable difference in this year's event will be the veteran's support theme for the downtown events. The Wurl-Feind-Ingman Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2687 has taken over management of the Main Street events and has declared 2016 the Year of the Veteran.
Friday evening's Thunder Parade will place participating veterans at the front of the line and offer free decals for their windshields. According to a press release from VFW Post 2687, "This is intended to draw attention to the numbers attending the event that gave of themselves for the freedoms of others."
The VFW members will setup a M*A*S*H command center - simulating that of the popular 1970s television show - where they will host trivia contests and the mayor of Tomahawk is expected to make an appearance as Klinger, one of the show's characters.
"We have a breakfast we serve every year, too," post commander Gerald Dvorak said. "We're going to have the basic scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes and then the best biscuits and gravy in the Northwoods. Maybe even the USA."
The breakfast will be held at the VFW post on 4th Street - within walking distance of Main Street - from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. today, tomorrow and Saturday.
"All of the proceeds from all of our tip jars go to Never Forgotten Honor Flight and the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation," Dvorak said. "The Never Forgotten Honor Flight is really something a veteran needs to experience and enjoy. It's free to them so we support that in a huge way as well as the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation."
As a whole, the Fall Ride supports MDA and in past years has raised as much as $100,000.
This year's live entertainment includes Iron Butterfly, Madman's Diary and Black Frog. Main Street will host Oil Can Harry, Crystal and the Commotions, Consult the Briefcase and Hyde.
Helicopter tours will offer aerial views of Lake Nokomis and the Tomahawk area. There will also be a karaoke contest and lawnmower, tractor and motorized barstool races.
A motorcycle will be raffled with tickets available for purchase through multiple locations listed at www.tomahawkfallride.com.
Christian prayer services will be conducted by the Christian Motorcyclist Association on Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and held in the Big Top tent.
Arbor Vitae participation
Northwoods Harley-Davidson in Arbor Vitae will take part in the weekend celebration with live entertainment and a selection of industry vendors.
The store will display its newest line of 2017 models as well as host a stamp chase, earning the winner a $500 shopping spree.
Enthusiasts will be able to watch Performance Dyno demonstrations and newbies to the industry can try the motorcycle simulator.
