The UW-Rhinelander Agricultural Research Station and Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association (WPVGA), in cooperation with local food pantries, are hosting an event to provide for local food needs. "A Night on the Farm - Helping fight local hunger" will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 and will include opportunities to pick potatoes for area food pantries, according to a press release from the research station.

"You will have the opportunity to learn about the research conducted by the UW Rhinelander Research Station as well as experience The Wisconsin Spudmobile - the Wisconsin potato industry's most comprehensive educational and informational on wheels resource center," the release states. "In addition to the picking for the food pantries, the station will be accepting additional non-perishable food item donations. Potatoes picked and donated items will be distributed in Rhinelander and other North Central Wisconsin communities. This is an informal event for individuals or the whole family. Light refreshments and food will be served. Please bring a container to pick and take your potatoes home!"

Rice for the pantry

Food pantry officials have also announced an opportunity for the public to pick wild rice, keep some for themselves and donate the rest to the pantry.

"Wild rice is usually ripe, ready for harvest, for a limited period of time following Labor Day," pantry officials said in a press release. "This year Scott and Ann Eshelman, Rhinelander Area Food Pantry volunteers and experienced "ricers," will provide an opportunity to harvest wild rice on the Wisconsin River, north of Rhinelander. You can pick as much or as little as you want to. You do not need any ricing experience but you should be comfortable in a canoe. Ricing requires two people - one to pole the canoe and the other to "pick" the rice. Scott and/or Ann will demonstrate what to do and provide an experienced ricing partner if needed. Equipment will be provided. After the harvest the Eshelmans will also arrange for the processing which is necessary to convert the green rice to the familiar edible form. The finished rice will then be available in late fall. You get a portion and the rest will be sold with the proceeds going to thefFood pantry."

Contact the Eshelmans at 715-362-4485 if interested.
