New Nicolet Live! season to bring broad array of theater events to the Northwoods
"It's just loaded with talent from around the world and also from right here in our own backyard," Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall said in a press release. "We always strive to offer a broad and diverse range of performances to make sure that there's something that will appeal to everyone."
World-class musical groups from South Africa and China will perform throughout the Northwoods as part of Nicolet's two-year partnership with Arts Midwest.
Lorraine Klaasen will bring her signature sway-groove Township Music sound from South Africa to Nicolet Saturday, Nov. 19. And on Saturday, Feb. 18, Anda Union from the Inner Mongolia region of China will showcase its rich and mesmerizing nomadic music.
"Both of these groups feature outstanding entertainers and cultural ambassadors and each will spend a week in the area visiting schools and communities," Nuttall noted.
The Emmy-Award winning a cappella group Tonic Sol-Fa will kick off the season with a special performance at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, in the Rhinelander High School auditorium. Hailed by The New York Times as a "vocal kaleidoscope, unique to the human voice," this popular trio has sold more than 1 million albums and appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and NBC's Today Show.
Local musicians will also be well represented in the upcoming Nicolet Live! season with the ever-popular Community Holiday Concert Sunday, Dec. 11, An Evening with Dave Drivas and Friends Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Community Music Festival Sunday, March 12, and An Evening with Tess and Chris and Friends Thursday, June 8.
"There are many, many talented local musicians in the Northwoods," Nuttall explained. "It's great to be able to showcase area groups every season and offer them a platform to share their considerable and entertaining skills."
On the theater side of the schedule, the popular comedy troupe Baby Wants Candy will return to Nicolet Saturday, March 11, with its unique brand of musical improv on par with a Saturday Night Live performance.
The Nicolet Players will break new ground this season with a Readers Theatre performance Tuesday, Nov. 29, as troupe members create "theater of the mind" by reading excerpts from the best American literature has to offer. In May, they'll return to their roots with seven performances of the classic comedy "Arsenic and Old Lace."
Film aficionados will get their fix with three cinema showings, including "The Age of Love" Friday, Feb. 3. The groundbreaking film takes a poignant and sometimes hilarious look at the dating scene for the 70-plus crowd. A winner of numerous awards, the film follows 30 seniors as they attend a speed dating event and then pair off in the days that follow.
Local film enthusiasts Steven Schreier and Tom Jerow will be back to present two foreign films. Just in time for Halloween, they'll present the scary comedy "The Host" Sunday, Oct. 30. The South Korean cult classic follows a father and his family as he sets out to rescue his daughter from a horrifying river monster. They'll follow this Thursday, Feb. 9, with the French film "The Fairy," which tells the whimsical tale of a lovelorn night hotel clerk who falls for an elusive fairy. Admission is free to all films.
Children's theatre, new age and classical music will round out the series.
Most of the events will take place in the recently-remodeled Nicolet Theater located on the Nicolet campus one mile south of Rhinelander just off of Hwy. G.
