Selected local artists will be opening their private spaces to visitors Friday, Oct. 6, Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can design their own experience by choosing from the 32 locations that ramble through Iron, Vilas, Oneida, Langlade and Lincoln counties. A map and detailed information about each artist and location is available at area chambers of commerce, many local businesses and on the tour website, www.northwoodsarttour.com.
"Artists will be demonstrating their techniques at their studios and discussing their creative process with visitors," tour organizers said in a press release. "The tour provides a unique opportunity to see where and why artists create, how ideas are formed and how the inspirations and concepts are transformed into one-of-a-kind works of art. There is always something new to experience on the tour. Seven new studios have been accepted this year and returning members are always exploring new processes and ideas. Work is available for purchase at all locations."
New member Susan Schurch of Blossoms Studio in Land O Lakes has turned her passion for design, wood burning and painting into creating new one-of-a-kind home furnishings with a Northwoods theme. She finds antiques and cast offs and transforms them into unique tables, stools and other useful home items, the release states.
After her retirement as a chemistry teacher, Louise Schotz signed up for classes to learn how to use her experience in traditional quilt-making to create original art using the quilt format. Adding embellishments such as embroidery and beading to the fiber art led to an interest in jewelry and working with metals. Schotz will be sharing both original art quilts and jewelry at her Outback Studio in Irma.
Adding to the variety of expression is gourd artist Karen Caldwell of LaDeDa Gourds in Lac du Flambeau. Caldwell draws on her experience with watercolor and wood carving to turn a wide variety of gourds into unique artwork.
"When I choose a gourd with interesting shape and markings that seem to fit with my inspiration, I decided whether it will be an open vessel, lidded vessel, ocean drum, thunder drum, ornament, necklace, birdhouse, planter or ornament," she said. "Each gourd provides a unique shape and color upon which to create."
Tim Black has been an artist and art student all his life. He paints regional landscapes and contemporary figurative oil paintings at his Midnight Production Studio, Boulder Junction. Adding her flare to the selection of pottery is Pamela Johnson Howe of NorthWind Pottery, Land O'Lakes. The artist uses her own blend of porcelain and stoneware clays to create carved and painted useful pieces to be enjoyed everyday.
Susan Kloch Wendlandt has been active on the Northwoods art scene for many years, but this is her first year on the tour. Wendlandt creates in a variety of media including photography, intaglio printmaking, collage, assemblage and lampworking. Her art philosophy is based experimentation and exploration. Visitors are invited to explore with her at Imagine That Studio in Arbor Vitae.
Returning to the tour in a new location, Frances Whitfield is an eclectic artist, creating in many media at her Border Country Art Studio, Manitowish Waters.
Whitfield reflected the feelings of many of the tour participants when she said: "I love being part of the art tour for the energy shared, meeting artists and others, sharing creativity and watching people's faces light up when they share their work or enjoy my work."
With studios that feature painting in watercolor, pastel, oil, acrylic and mixed media, weaving, fiber arts, original printmaking, photography, woodworks, glass, pottery, jewelry and more, there is something to interest everyone, the release states. Northwoods Art Tour artists provide a friendly casual atmosphere to learn about, experience and shop for art. The adventure is free to the public. No tickets or reservations are needed.
