Rhinelander Railroad Association planning holiday open house
By Kayla Thomason-
As people approach the museum they will notice the engine outside is decorated.
Children can sit on the Soo Speeder, a train car, and go on a free ride down the approximately 200-foot track.
Inside the museum, on the upper level, the Christmas train display will be active and people can enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, and munch on some holiday cookies.
In the lower level, guests can take in the intricate details of the main train model. Eight or 10 trains will be running.
The main train setup represents the Rhinelander era from 1939 to 1955, and if the trains and tracks were life-size the track would cover a little over 200 miles.
"The layout covers everything from Thunder Lake Lumber Company to the original paper mill to the downtown of Rhinelander, goes all the way up into Florence County, it just represents all of that whole era," said Tom Theilig, vice president/treasurer of the Rhinelander Railroad Association.
The Rhinelander Railroad Association has been working, tweaking and upgrading the display for the past 15 to 20 years.
"(The train display is) just a very enjoyable thing," Theilig said. "We had, during the summertime, 8,000 people come through the museum and it's become well known that this is there."
