If RAFP can raise $600 by Dec. 15 Seedmoney will provide the Community Garden with an additional $400, the organization announced in a press release.
The Rhinelander Area Food Pantry Community Garden has been successfully growing 3,000-5,000 pounds of fresh produce each of the past 10 years. All of the food grown is then distributed through the food pantry to families in need in the Rhinelander area. The garden has a three-tier mission: to grow food for hungry people, to do so in an environmentally sensitive manner, and to provide education about gardening, horticulture, and nutrition. In 2015 the food pantry added a greenhouse to the garden operation.
"Now, we not only grow vegetable starts for the community garden but we also grow vegetable starts for our clients at the pantry in an effort to encourage them to grow their own food," said Tom Jerow, co-chair of the community garden. "In each of the past two summers, we distributed over 1,500 plants to families growing their own gardens."
