Community members enjoyed delicious soup for a good cause Saturday at the seventh annual Soup for Shelter event held inside the Nativity Catholic School gym.

People chose from Friendship House's chicken noodle soup, Crimson Cafe's tomato basil soup, Coffee Beans' Three Sisters soup, CT Deli's creamy chicken with wild rice soup, Riverview Restaurant's chicken dumpling soup and Moondance's cream of mushroom soup with the proceeds benefiting the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH) Frederick Place homeless shelter. To top off the meal there were delicious desserts made by community members and organizations.

"I think it's really nice, wonderful choices (of soup) and it's a wonderful thing to do for the community," said Jan Vanderpoel, who was attending Soup for Shelter for the first time.

She said she was pleased to see so many businesses make soup for the event and really enjoyed the creamy chicken wild rice soup she tasted.

"I think (the event is) wonderful, I was really happy when they first opened the (Frederick Place) homeless shelter and I'm glad there's something going on to help support it," Vanderpoel added.

Mary Shandley shared her thoughts on the event while enjoying a bowl of chicken noodle soup.

"They're (the businesses are) so generous, we have good community support here," she said.

"They need all the help they can get, we're very fortunate to have something like that in Rhinelander," she added.

Kathleen Currie enjoyed both the chicken wild rice soup and the warm, welcoming atmosphere.

"It's wonderful, great turnout, lots of friendly faces, great cause," she said.

"I just want to thank Nativity parish for hosting this, it's really gracious of them, so thank you," Currie added.

Tammy Modic, executive director of NATH, was happy with the turnout.

"It continues to amaze me, the support of the community," she said.

She was pleased to see children at the event, as there were several raffles especially for them.

It costs approximately $233,000 per year to operate Frederick Place, and the fundraising committee is charged with generating $55,000. This event typically raises $2,000 to $3,000 dollars.

Modic added that about 80 people have pledged $100 as part the 1,000 Give 100 campaign.

"If we ever get to that 1,000 people pledging and donating $100 a year that's almost half of our operating budget that we at least know should be coming in every single year. And I think the key is that pledge to the future because a lot of people have been giving $100 a year but I don't know that it's coming in because they didn't pledge to the future," Modic said.

For more information on pledging, call Frederick Place at 715-369-9777.
