Students in K through fifth-grade participated in a coloring contest as part of the fire department's fire prevention program. Each class had a different theme and a judge selected one winning drawing from each group.
The winners were picked up by the fire truck Wednesday morning and taken to Cindy's Cafe for a pancake breakfast with the firefighters.
After breakfast, they pulled up in front of the school with the truck's lights flashing.
The students also received a $25 prepaid gift card donated by the Three Lakes branch of BMO Harris Bank.
"My favorite part of the Ride to School Program is getting to spend time with the kids and finding out what they enjoyed with the program and just having fun hanging out with them and going to breakfast," said Andy Beach, fire prevention coordinator with the Three Lakes Fire Department.
He said the students are wide-eyed and excited to ride in the truck.
They also enjoy being up high and interacting with the firefighters.
"This has been the capstone of our project now for fire prevention for six years and the feedback from the community, and from the parents and from the students has been overwhelmingly positive," he said.
Six years ago the department learned about program called Pride and Ownership, which bolsters community involvement. Children had to read books and those who read the most books would get a ride to school. The Three Lakes Fire Department liked the idea, but wanted it to tie into their own program.
"We wanted to tie this into our fire prevention program, that's where the coloring contest started," Beach said.
This year's winning students were Trygg Alsager, 4K; Trenton Peterson, kindergarten; Kate Koshuta, first- grade; Wyatt Gebele, second-grade; Maddy Mahlerwein, third- grade; Riley Lob, fourth- grade; and Willow Schroeder, fifth-grade.
