Elcho woman and three others to be awarded GFWC Health Scholarship in May
Goerke is a returning adult student at Nicolet College who is re-inventing herself from veterinary services to become a medical assistant/emergency medical technician (EMT), the club said in a press release.
The other scholarship recipients are from Beloit and Plymouth and are focusing on areas of orthodontics, pediatric neonatal nursing and emergency medicine.
Scholarships are given out each year by GFWC-WI to Wisconsin students and adults who are pursuing a career in the health field.
The recipients of the scholarships will be recognized at the state convention May 14 in Sturgeon Bay. GFWC - Wisconsin pays $500 for each recipient for the students' January 2017 semester expenses.
GFWC is an international women's organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. At the convention more than 100 Wisconsin delegates celebrate GFWC's 126th anniversary recognizing the often unheralded work clubwomen contribute to their communities across the country and in 12 countries across the globe.
Additional awards will be announced over the weekend.
Locally, the GFWC-Rhinelander Woman's Club has been organized since 1898 when 20 women interested in study, fellowship, and improving the city formed the Rhinelander Woman's Club. The club became federated with GFWC in 1905. The club's first project involved the purchase of 300 books for the first library in the city. Current projects include volunteer support at Food Pantry, The Table, Harvest Hoedown, Food for the Mind, reading at day cares, National History Day to name a few. In addition, this year the club contributed $40,000 toward local and international projects. The club has 61 members.
