"We are trying to improve our junior program right now," Jillian Lathrop said. "We aren't seeing as many younger people get into the club, and we'd like to see more."
She said there is no age requirement to join the Chain Skimmers and they will teach anyone interested everything from the basics to how to become a show skier.
Right now there are about 30 people in the club, Lathrop said. They hold shows at 7 p.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day on Lake Pleasant in Conover. Admission to the shows is $6 for adults and children under 12 are free.
"To my knowledge, we are the only team in the state that owns their own lake," Jillian Lathrop said. "The team was started back in the 1970s. The man that started the team bought the lake and started everything."
She said the team made their last mortgage payment on the lake property about seven or eight years ago. The team holds fundraisers such as bake sales at Trig's in Eagle River as well as car washes around the area. Those events help them with a variety of projects related to the team.
Two years ago, the Chain Skimmers competed in Division 3 at the state championships. They came home with the win in that state event. This past year they were moved up to Division 2, and finished in fifth place.
For a team that is operated solely by kids and young adults, they have remained very competitive and look to keep having great showings at state meets in the future, Lathrop said.
