The American Cancer Society is recruiting teams from local families, businesses, schools, places of worship, and the community as a whole to participate in the annual Relay For Life United Up North July 16 at Hodag Park in Rhinelander.

The Relay For Life is an annual walkathon benefiting the American Cancer Society, the organization said in a press release. Teams and individuals can learn more and sign up for the Relay For Life event by visiting www.relayforlife.org/unitedupnorthwi.

"The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all," the release states. "The Rhinelander area and Forest County events are proud to announce their collaboration to join their communities in a common fight against cancer. Through partnering in the fundraising effort, event leads feel they will be better able to reach out to more people, engage more survivors and caregivers and raise more funds for the fight."

"This opportunity to join with Forest County teams and participants is really exciting for us," said Angela Harris, the Rhinelander area volunteer co-lead. "Working with a neighboring community expands our reach and engages additional people to join the fight against cancer."

The volunteer event lead from Crandon, Stacey Jameson, agreed with Harris. "This opportunity to bring several communities together in a united up north group, provides us with additional opportunities to grow the event, and fundraise for the mission of The American Cancer Society," Jameson said. "The event will be held lakeside at Hodag Park this year but we have several events that will take place in Crandon as well. We want to be sure everyone feels they are still part of this important event and effort to end cancer in our lifetime."

Relay For Life events are community gatherings where teams and individuals gather at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Teams raise funds in the months leading up to the event. Besides the walk, there are additional activities that take place throughout the event.

"The Relay For Life movement is the world's largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community, with four million participants in 6,000 events worldwide in 2015," according to the release. "Everyone is invited to attend the celebration at Hodag Park on July 16. You do not have to be a member of a team to be part of the event."

Last year, 300 people participated in the Relay For Life events in Crandon and Rhinelander and raised nearly $50,000.

"Relay For Life is a chance to make the greatest impact in the fight to end cancer," said Stacy Timm, Rhinelander area volunteer and Relay For Life event co-lead. "Many participants are our loved ones who have faced cancer themselves. Each new team brings us one step closer to saving more lives."
