Sixteen Rhinelander High School students competed at the DECA State Conference March 8-10 in Lake Geneva. The students competed in multiple events that focused on one of four tenets of business: marketing, finance, hospitality, and management, the school district said in a press release.

All competitors had to take a 100-question test about one of the four business cluster categories, depending on which one their event fell under. For example, those competing in the Travel and Tourism event had to take a hospitality test. After taking the test, each student or team of two or three students had to perform two role plays with judges. Role plays are similar to real life situations that may occur and the students have to do their best to solve it in front of a potential noncompliant customer, business partner, or client (played by the judge). All competitors also had to take a 100-question economics test prior to competing. Medals were awarded to students who did exceptionally well in a role play or test.

Of the 16 Hodag competitors, one individual and a team of three qualified for the 2016 DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Nashville, Tenn. ICDC will be held from April 22-27 with about 11,000 competitors from all 50 U.S. states and other countries such as Canada, Mexico, China, Guam, and Germany.

Faith Bartelt qualified by taking 7th at state in Business Services. Alison Kubeny, Haley Sisel, and Taylor Trachte competed in a project-based event, Community Service, and placed second, qualifying them for Internationals.

Gunnar Millot will be joining the four in Nashville to represent Rhinelander in the Emerging Leaders Academy. He applied for this position and was selected by the State DECA Advisor to attend.

Besides those who qualified for Internationals, Rhinelander had five other students on the stage at state. Travel & Tourism team Brianna DeNamur and Taylor Trachte were Overall Series finalists, meaning that they competed especially well overall but didn't qualify for the next level. They also were awarded medals for their performance in their test and a role play. Robert Ritchie was an Overall Series Finalist in Automotive Services and received a medal for his series test. Alison Kubeny was on stage for a role play in her event, Human Resources. Markus Johnson also received a medal in Principles of Business Administration for one of his role plays.

Millot was a state officer candidate finalist for Vice President of Brand Management at DECA State. He gave a platform speech to all the voting candidates before the opening ceremony. He was then asked questions for 12 minutes before the vote.

He was up against Addie Kubitz of Monona Grove. Running for office is an arduous process that requires submitting a lengthy application and going down to Deforest High School for a day of interviews;all prior to the state speeches and interviews. Although Kubitz ended up with the most votes, Millot said he is glad to have the opportunity to be a nominee and for the more extensive experience he gained with interviews.

Bartelt was on stage for something exciting besides competing. She sang the national anthem at the opening ceremony in front of about 2,000 people including competitors, advisers, and business/industry representatives.

As a chapter, Rhinelander was recognized for donations to Muscular Dystrophy Association (DECA's national charity), general contributions to charities, Diamond Level Membership (increased chapter size by 20 percent from last year), 100 hours of service, Gold Level Certification as a chapter, Acts of Kindness, and the membership campaign process.

The group is advised by Mischell Fryar and Patrick Kubeny. To make a donation to assist the students attending ICDC or for more information about the group, contact Fryar at (715) 365-9500 or [email protected].
